The next morning, Mackenzie awoke to the soft glow of sunlight streaming through the dorm room curtains. She stretched beneath her blanket before slipping out of bed and heading straight for the bathroom. After brushing her teeth, she carefully selected a pair of silver stud earrings from her small jewelry box and slipped them on, admiring the subtle sparkle in the mirror.
Returning to her room, Mackenzie neatly made her bed, smoothing out the blanket until not a wrinkle remained. With her chores complete, she settled onto the couch in the common area and opened a book she had been eager to start: The Devil of Downtown by Uptown Girls. The story immediately drew her in, its words flowing smoothly across the page. She lost herself in the novel, flipping page after page until fifteen minutes had slipped by.
Deciding she needed to freshen up, Mackenzie set the book aside, gently removed her earrings, and stepped into the shower. The warm water soothed her as she washed away the remnants of sleep. Once she had finished, she dressed carefully in her chosen outfit for the day, then stood at her mirror brushing her hair until it gleamed. A quick stop to the bathroom followed, and then she went to gently wake Kayla.
"Kayla," Mackenzie whispered, nudging her friend's shoulder. "Time to get up."
Kayla stirred with a sleepy groan before sitting up. "Already?" she mumbled.
"Yep," Mackenzie said with a smile. "We don't want to be late."
Once Kayla was fully awake, the two girls moved toward the small kitchenette for breakfast. Kayla prepared herself a bowl of protein oatmeal topped with berries, while Mackenzie treated herself to golden brown pancakes drizzled with maple syrup. They sat together, eating quietly at first, then chatting about the upcoming day.
After breakfast, Kayla slipped into her outfit while Mackenzie waited for her outside, the cool morning air brushing her face as she adjusted the straps on her backpack. A few minutes later, Kayla joined her, and together they walked toward the school building, side by side.
The school day passed in a blur of activity. Mackenzie and Kayla turned in their signed papers with confidence, and their efforts paid off-each received a perfect score of one hundred percent. The sense of pride and relief filled them both, and they exchanged smiles of accomplishment.
When classes ended, the two returned to their dorm. They removed their jewelry carefully, storing it away in their cases before sitting down to eat a simple dinner of leftovers. Though it wasn't anything fancy, the meal was comforting, and they laughed about the day's little moments as they ate.
After dinner, they brushed their teeth and prepared for bed. Mackenzie ran a brush through her hair one last time, while Kayla did the same beside her. The room was quiet, the kind of cozy silence that comes from friendship and routine.
"Goodnight, Mackenzie," Kayla said softly as she turned toward her bed.
"Goodnight, Kayla," Mackenzie replied with a warm smile.
She turned off the lamp, allowing the room to slip into peaceful darkness. Within minutes, Mackenzie's eyes grew heavy, and she drifted into sleep, ready for whatever the next morning would bring.
