The next morning, Mackenzie woke up to the faint light of dawn spilling through her curtains. She rubbed her eyes, stretched, and quickly got dressed for school. After slipping into her outfit, she padded down the hall to help her little brother, Miles, get ready.

He was sitting cross-legged on the floor in his pajamas, humming softly to himself.

“Come on, Miles,” Kenzie said gently, kneeling beside him. “Let’s get you ready.”

She helped him pull on his navy socks and then fastened his small navy shoes. At 4 years and 5 months old, Miles was noticeably shorter than his big sister, who was now 4 years and 9 months old. Still, he looked up to her in almost everything, and Kenzie liked being the one to guide him.

Once he was dressed, she carried him into the kitchen and helped him settle at the table. She poured his cereal, carefully watching to make sure he didn’t spill the milk as he ate. When Miles finished, Kenzie wiped his little hands and mouth, then let him wander back to his toys while she picked out something to do for herself.

Her eyes landed on a stack of books. She chose one and curled up on the couch to read. By the time she finished, she glanced at the clock and noticed it was already 4:25. She hopped down, eager to squeeze in another quick story.

“Who knew my baby brother loves Blaze?” she thought with a smile as she flipped through the colorful pages of the new book, the bright cars and trucks filling her imagination.

At 4:30, she knew it was time to finish getting ready. She grabbed her tie-dye shoes, her favorite pink book, and checked her backpack. “Everything’s good,” she said proudly to herself, double-checking that nothing was missing. With her shoes and backpack in hand, she headed outside.

The morning air was cool and fresh. On the porch, she saw her mother, Mia, holding Miles on her hip.

“Hey Mommy, good morning!” Kenzie greeted brightly.

“Morning, sweetheart,” Mia replied, giving her a warm smile even though she looked a little tired.

“Where’s Daddy?” Kenzie asked curiously.

“He’s still in bed. Your father isn’t feeling well today,” Mia explained, gently rocking Miles as he rested his head on her shoulder.

“He needs to wake up,” Kenzie said with a small frown, worried about him.

“No, Kenzie, he needs to rest,” Mia reminded softly.

Kenzie thought for a moment, then wrapped her arms around her mother. “He’ll be alright,” she reassured, her voice calm and confident for someone so young. Mia kissed the top of her daughter’s head, grateful for her sweetness.

Shoes in hand, Kenzie skipped down the steps and began walking toward school. She swung her backpack lightly as she went, already thinking about what the day might bring. When she arrived, she spotted her friend Kayla waiting near the entrance.

“Kenzie!” Kayla called, waving.

Kenzie grinned and waved back, hurrying over. With her best friend by her side, she felt ready for anything the day had to offer.

In the end, everything turned out just fine for Brian. Though there were days of worry and moments of uncertainty, the strength of his family’s love carried him through. Mia’s patience, Mackenzie’s kindness, and Miles’s innocent laughter reminded him that no matter how difficult life became, he was never alone. And with that, a new chapter of their family’s story began—full of hope, warmth, and brighter days ahead.
