I must've fallen asleep on the bus because when I woke up, we were in some sort of desert. I looked around and out the windows to see holes, a lot of them. 'Huh, Why are there Holes?' I Thought to myself. I turned to the guard and asked him the same question. "That's for you to find out." I was even more confused when he said that. He said it in a modern tone but even that gave me chills. We were moving a lot slower than before and I soon saw why there were holes. People were digging them. As we moved closer and closer to the camp, those people soon turned into boys, only boys. I got worried as we pulled up and stopped. I stepped out of my seat and walked towards the entrance of the bus.
"Thanks for the ride." I told the driver as the guard led me out of the bus. I inhaled a lot of dust and heard someone say "A Girl... HEY GUYS A GIRL!!!" It's like he's never seen a girl before, but then one person soon turned into more. they all stared at me, making comments to their friends. "Hey, how are you?" I turned to see someone behind me. He was really tall, had his black hair slicked back and a face only a mother could love. "Oh I was fine, until you came over." I snapped back at him and he had a shocked look on his face. The other boys who were in the crowd laughed and snickered to their friends more.
The guard told me to follow him into this sort of shed. I followed and asked "So where's the lake?" "Hey, what did I say, don't be wise! Now follow!" I don't remember him saying that, so it must've been before I fell asleep. We walked into an office type set up and just stood until a man with slicked back hair and wearing some sort of flannel told me to sit. It was silent until he broke it. "So Robin Andrews," He looked at this file, which must've been something about me. "Why'd you choose Camp Green Lake? I mean, didn't the judge tell you it's all boys?" "I think he failed to mention that." I said in a modern tone, not wanting to look at him but knew I had to at some point.
"Well, no turning back now..." He said as he looked at my file once more. "My name's Mr. Sir. You will address me as this, you got that?" I was holding back laughter. I didn't wanna look at him whilst I was holding it back, since he looked angry. "You think this is funny Andrews?" Mr. Sir said, looking at me. "No Mr. Si-" "This ain't no Girl Scout's Camp, ya'hear?" Mr. Sir cut me off, and I just sat there. "Yes Mr. Sir." He took something out of his mini fridge and gave some water to the guard. I didn't take it, I knew it wasn't for me. "Smart Girl." Mr. Sir said, I looked at the ground more. "Usually they try and take the water." "Well, I knew it wasn't for me, Mr. Sir." He raised an eyebrow at me.
The guard left soon after and Mr. Sir led me to another shed. He was talking to me about escaping and how if I wanted to I could, but there's no water for a couple miles. I told him I wasn't planning on escaping anyways and he looked shocked at that as well. He must get told different answers because of his reactions. We arrived and I heard someone greet Mr. Sir, it was the guy from before. He gave me a wink as he saw me, and I gave him a dirty look. He smirked to himself and looked back at what he was doing. Mr. Sir handed me some clothes and told me to undress. I looked at him funny. "There's no way I'm getting dressed whilst you two are looking." He looked at me, then the boy. "Turn Boy." The boy sighed. I quickly got dressed into this orange jumpsuit, some black boots and left my hair as it was. "Done." They both turned and looked behind me. "Robin Andrews," I turned to see a short man, with a sunhat on and sunscreen on his nose. "Yep" That was all I said. "Now, you may have done some bad things but that does not make you a bad kid. I respect you, Robin." He put out his hand, insisting I shake it. I shook it firmly and he continued to talk. "My name is Mr. Pendanski." I thought that was a strange name, but just gave him a light smile. "Give her some shower tokens, and show her where she'll stay." Mr. Sir said as he stood in the middle of me and Pendanski.
"That there is the wreck room, and those are the showers." He showed me around and I looked at one thing after the other. "Now, there's only one temperature - Cold." "Wait, why aren't the showers covered? Surely there's another place I could shower?" He looked at the ground, thinking. "Well, the wardens got a shower so I can ask if you can use hers." I was thankful, firstly that I didn't have to shower in the open, but also that there's another girl here! "Now there are tents arranging from A - F." 'They are very organised.' I thought. "You'll be in D-Tent, which stands for diligent." "Hey mom, who's the-" There were a group three boys, two dark-skinned and one white. "Rex, Alan, Theodore, this is Robin and she will be staying with you guys. Rex was the one who was talking then stopped, he had dirty glasses on and was one of the dark-skinned boys. Then there was Alan, who was wearing a white t-shirt with a hat on. Then there was Theodore, who was a little heavier than the other two, had a hat on and was the other dark-skinned boy. "Hey, for the last time," Rex said, then paused for a minute to look at me. "It's X-Ray, Squid and Armpit, aight?" 'Hmm, nicknames. They must all have them.' I thought.
"And him," Squid started talking. He had a Southern accent. "He's Mom." Pendanski didn't look impressed because he soon explained to me in a dull voice. "They all have their little nicknames, but I prefer to use the names their parents gave them, the names society will recognise them by." I didn't question it, I just looked at the boys then followed Pendanski to the next place. We arrived at the D-Tent and I heard laughter coming from the tent. I got really nervous as I knew there weren't gonna be any girls in the tent. X-Ray, Squid and Armpit came running from behind us and into the tent. Squid knocked my shoulder and quickly said "Sorry darling." He ran inside to catch up with X-Ray and Armpit. I looked at Pendanski and he just kept looking forward. "Well, ready to meet the rest of them?" He looked at me, waiting for an answer. "Ready as I'll ever be." I gave him a quick smile walked in first. 'This is gonna be a long 20 months' I thought.
