The First Hole

I woke up to the sound of a siren type sound. I sat up straight and remembered how I had to dig today. 'Ugh, do I have to?' I thought. Even though it was dark, I still saw the boys get up and wake each other up, hearing groans coming from all of them. I brushed my hair, put on my orange jumpsuit and bandana, put my black boots on and walked out the tent. Squid wasn't ready in time to give me a hand, but I didn't really mind. I had to start being a little more independent if I wanted to have these 20 months go by fast. I waited outside for all the boys to come out and we walked in a group. They were all slouching, but I didn't have a problem standing up straight. "Damn, how are you not slouching? You not tired?" I heard a voice behind me, which turned out to be Squid. "Nah, I'm used to getting up early." I started to tell him. "At home, I had to get up around 4 in the morning and help my dad with cars and building." He looked at me shocked, as if he'd never heard a girl say something like that before. He gave me a smirk, "Well, you must be good with your hands them." I looked at him with one eyebrow up and just smiled. 

We made it to a shed called the 'Library'. I looked confused, but soon realised it was meant for shovels and not books.  We all got in line and as the day before, I stood behind Squid. However, Caveman was standing behind me, which as I was told previous by Squid that he's always at the front. I didn't ask him why he was there, I just looked ahead and waited to grab a shovel. I hear Mr. Sir and Pendanski say something about what time it was and how we need to be awake, but I barely listened. Then, out of nowhere, X-ray grabbed my shovel and threw his on the ground. I picked his up and Magnet came up to me. "Hey, you picked up X-ray's shovel. It's shorter than the rest of them." I did remember how X-ray said he wouldn't treat me like a princess, but surely he would have decency to not steal others shovels. I sighed and and started walking again. "Smaller Shovel, Smaller Hole." I recognised that was Squids voice and I looked at him, confused. I didn't question him and just shrugged it off.

We arrived at our destination and Mr. Sir pointed to where I was meant to dig. "Now, if you find anything interesting, you report it to me or Pendanski, got it?" Mr. Sir waited for my answer, but I was confused. "Well, what am I meant to be looking for?" He sighed at me and said "You're not digging holes to find something, you're doing it to build character. That's our philosophy here at Camp Green Lake." I looked at him, and nodded. I picked up my shovel and dented the ground. I stood on my shovel but fell over. Mr. Sir laughed at walked over to his truck. He drove as a crowd of dust followed behind the vehicle. I started to dig and made a small pile. The day only got hotter as the sun came up and soon enough, the jumpsuits became ovens.  Some of the guys had taken the top of the jumpsuits and tied it to their waists. I did the same, and lucky I had a shirt underneath. Some of the guys stared as I took the top half off, and I stared back at them. I didn't care if they stared whilst I did that, just not when I got changed. 

We all continued to dig and I realised that I was almost done. "Whoa, you're almost done. damn." Squid started. "Damn Chase." ZigZag added and soon all of them were staring down into my hole. "How are you that fast? Zero's not even done yet, and he's the fastest!" Caveman said as I looked up at them "Idk why, I mean it's not my first time digging a hole ya'know?" They all looked surprised as if to indicated that they've never seen a girl dig a hole. 'Wow, these boys don't know that girls are capable of stuff like this yet. Well, it seems like that at least.' I thought. "Well, I suggest you guys go back. That is if you don't want to stay in the sun all day." they all nodded and went back to their holes.

Soon, the water truck came with Mr. Sir in it and all the boys got out of their holes. Squid put his hand out to help me, but I got out myself. I smiled but told him I was fine. We both walked to the line and I got to the back behind Zero. It seemed like they were all in some sort of order, with X-Ray at the front and Zero at the back. Soon, it was my turn for water and I handed him my canteen. "So, how's your first day Andrews?" "Pretty good, sir." I responded to him and he looked at my hands. He looked surprised and I gave him a confused look. "What Sir?" He looked up at me and said "You got no blisters, usually all the new guys get blisters on their first day." All the guys came over to look at my hands, and they all looked shocked aswell. "Damn, how is that fair? I got blisters on my first day!" Caveman looked at me and I shrugged. " I guess I've trained my hands to take pain and work without getting hurt, if that's possible." I chuckled to myself and they all just looked at me. "So," Mr. Sir broke the eye contact off me and onto him. "I see your holes almost done." "Yep. It's not my first time digging a hole sir." He just nodded and went back into his truck

I finished my hole just after Mr. Sir left and I climbed out of my hole. I sat with my legs dangling over my hole and drank some of my water. I wanted to save it since I wanted to wait for some people to be done. I walked over to each of their holes and just looked at them as they worked. I came over to Caveman and saw he wasn't even half way done. I stared at him for a little, just watching him dig. "Need some help?" I asked, which made him jump a little. "Uh- Uh I'm fine thanks." He stuttered a little but I insisted in help him. "Go drink some water, I'll get you most of the way done. Then, you just finish it off." He nodded and gave me his gloves to use, but I refused. He was taken back, but got out of his hole and let me do it. It only took me 30 minutes before I finished the part I said I would do. He looked surprised. "Thanks." He said, with a slight smile. "Hey, no problem. Besides, you looked like you needed some help anyways." I got out of his hole and went over to Squid. He was half way done. I asked if he wanted some help and he said yes. So, I did the rest for him. He said that he didn't need me to do half, but I still did. "Well thanks darling." He gave me a hug, which surprised me a bit.

After I asked everyone, I just sat near my hole and waited til everyone was done. I wanted to wait for the last person since I didn't want them walking back by themselves. today, ZigZag was the last one and I walked back with him. We both got changed at met everyone in the Mess Hall. It was the same food, but I was gonna eat my bread today. The bread still looked like the only thing edible on my tray. I sat down in-between Zero and Squid as I did the day before. I ate my bread and juts looked at the rest of my food. I didn't eat the stuff yesterday and I still didn't today. but I knew I had no other choice, since I was starving. So I ate it, and it wasn't as I thought it would be. As I was eating, some guy came up to our table and talked to me. "Hey girl, ya'know if you don't wanna hangout with these people, there's always a spot at my table." I looked at him with disgust and told him "No, I think I'm fine here thanks." He looked at me with a smirk. "Well, if you change your mind, just tell me." He winked at me. "No, I don't think I will. And besides, their a pretty good looking group of guys, unlike you and your group. So, just leave me alone please." He scoffed and walked back to his table. I looked back at them and they were all just staring at me, with red faces. "What? Someone had to put him in his place. And I wasn't lying." They all looked down and I smiled at them.

After we finished our food, we went to the Wreck Room. As we entered, I saw the guy from before and his group of friends. Squid must've seen them too because when I growled at them, he did as well. I tried to ignore the guy but I caught him staring at me multiple times. I soon had enough of his staring. I started to walk over to him but Squid and Caveman stopped me. "Hey." Caveman started. "Where are you going?" "I'm going over to his group. I've had enough of him." They both looked worried. "Oh no you don't." Squid told me. "You're not going over there. What if something happens?" They both looked serious this time. "I'll be fine. Anyways, you're over here so if something happens, you'll be able to see it." They both watched me go. I walked over to the guy and his group confidently and asked what they were talking about. He turned to me and held my waist. "I'm talking about you, and how if you were mine I would do so many things to you that you wouldn't be able to walk." "You're joking right?" I asked him. "No beautiful. Now, why doesn't my little bunny come with me some quieter?" I had enough of his crap. I smiled at him. "Oh I just can't explain how much I'm not your little bunny." I then frowned. I pulled his arms away from my waist, threw him on the ground and kicked him where it hurts. "No." I smiled and walked off. All the guys in the room looked shocked and nervous. I walked over to D-tent and smiled at them. "I had enough of him." That was all I said to them. They nodded, smiling back. Soon enough, the bell went and we all got dressed. the boys knew to turn and I quickly put on what I had on the day before. We all fell asleep quickly and I dreamt about people. Only they weren't random people. They were some of my tentmates.
