"please let me embrace you."
it had been a few weeks since hanako had begun managing nekoma's volleyball team, and kenma was highly suspicious of how good she was doing - you know, socially? well, maybe he wasn't suspicious, more like jealous, but he didn't want to admit that.
seeing her act so naturally with his teammates slowly began to piss him off. it was bad enough seeing her so carefree with lev, but to have her smiling at boys she hardly knew began to irritate him greatly.
kenma knew he should've been happy that she was making friends and being more openly receptive to the idea, but watching from the sidelines was something he'd started to vastly dislike when it came to this specific girl.
he hated it. he hated how it felt.
still, each day, she would sit with him and kuroo at lunch, and each day, she would sit behind him in class for hours. it felt selfish of him to want more.
although kenma was slowly losing his sanity, hanako was beginning to like nekoma much more. she wouldn't ever say it out loud, but she liked the boys on nekoma's team a little more than the boys on karasuno's. except for nishinoya and tanaka, of course.
as she sat in her japanese literature class, hanako drew tiny drawings of little cartoon volleyball players, each looking strangely like a mixture of her past and present team. sighing, she closed her notebook, and looked back over the stanza she finished analysing over half an hour ago. what is wrong with this teacher?
kenma, who had also finished his work, focused on the scratching of her pencil to paper as he tuned out the buzz of conversation around him. his eyes drifted to the window, and saw the reflection of hanako shading in the corner of her page.
lips curling upwards in amusement, he decided to turn around and speak to her. "hi." his arms folded on the back of his chair, resting his head on top of them as he stared at her paper.
"hey, kenma." hanako spoke gently. although the people in her class were speaking, it was mostly in hushed and low tones, meaning she was slightly afraid that she'd get yelled at for talking if her voice rung out louder than anyone else's. she wasn't the loud type anyway, but she was still cautious.
pressing further into his arms, he asked, "have you been told about the training camp yet?" raising her eyebrows, hanako shook her head, leaning forwards ever so slightly so that she could hear him better.
"when is it?" she asked, placing her head on her arms in the same way he had. kenma couldn't help but find it cute. what the hell am i thinking?
clearing his throat, he averted his eyes to the window, speaking quickly before returning his gaze to her. "about two weeks away. a team from miyagi's coming. maybe you've played them before."
hanako blinked, her eyes half-lidded as she stifled a yawn and stretched her arms forwards. she looks like a cat. "maybe." she mused, leaning back in her chair. "what team is it?"
in all honesty, she didn't know what answer she was expecting, but she certainly didn't think kenma would say what he said. "karasuno."
her movements froze, her eyes wide and mouth hanging ever so slightly open. "karasuno?" she whispered, earning a hesitant nod from kenma.
"uh, yeah. i've heard of them from coach, our school used to have some kind of rivalry with them before. you know them?"
a small smile pulled at her lips, and hanako settled her head back into her arms. "that was my old team." she confessed, and now it was kenma's turn to short circuit.
mentally, the idea of meeting her old friends and teammates made him feel insecure. in his mind, once they arrived, she'd forget all about kenma, and cast him aside until they left again.
he wasn't sure why it was bothering him so much, but he'd never felt like a second choice before. "oh." he managed, casting his eyes towards the floor, and letting his hair cover his face a little.
"i really hope you like them." hanako said, fiddling with her blazer sleeve. "they're kind of...overbearing. you get used to it though. it took me a while to even attempt speaking to them." a small laugh slipped past her lips, and it made the boy's chest erupt with overwhelming emotion. fuck.
"more overbearing than tora?" he half-joked, earning a small smile from the brunette.
"i have a friend who's exactly the same as him. when those two meet, they'll either love each other, or hate each other. we'll just have to see what happens."
hanako was attempting to make the best of the situation, she really did want to see her friends again, but the thought of her past meeting her present was beyond terrifying. she didn't know how she was going to handle it.
humming, kenma looked up at her, falling victim to her pretty jade eyes. they were impossible to look away from - well, that was the case for him. "i'm glad you're our manager." oh shit. why did i say that?
before he could backpedal, hanako's cheeks flushed ever so slightly, and she had to look away so she didn't get more flustered. "i'm glad you asked me to be." hanako confessed, fiddling with her fingers.
the fluttering in her chest only got worse when the boy gave her a small smile, his eyes softening a dramatic amount when he realised he hadn't made her uncomfortable.
well, he had. just not in the way that he thought he might've. to her, the discomfort lay at the bottom of her stomach, and it felt like her heart had fallen through her chest.
she'd never felt so light and heavy at the same time. her head was cloudy, and her lungs felt like someone had squeezed the air out of them. whatever the feeling was, she didn't like it.
but...she didn't hate it either.
