"i have the tendency to overreact. emotions confuse me, and i can't control them."
"oh, come on, fun size. aren't you happy for me?" katsuo pouted, making kuroo laugh. of course she was happy, hanako just didn't want to congratulate him in front of everyone. she'd bake him cookies later.
"well, i'm proud. what did you say your position was?" sakurai asked. katsuo and kuroo smirked, giving each other an odd look before bursting into laughter. even kenma had a small smile on his lips.
hanako didn't get it. "what?" her voice was quiet, only loud enough for her brother to hear - and kenma, who was walking on the other side of her. he glanced at her face, lines set in confusion, and he couldn't help but smile a tad wider.
patting her head, katsuo chuckled at her. "nothing." he turned back to the girl his sister had befriended. "i'm a point guard." everyone turned to him blankly, besides hanako. she knew the position he had played all his life very well.
"what does that do?" kuroo questioned, leaning over kenma's head to look at katsuo.
he grinned proudly. "you play volleyball, right? it's kind of like your setter position. the point guard is the foundation of any good team. they make it easier for their team to score points by opening new opportunities on the court. it's kind of like...the brains of the team, i guess. " kenma looked up from his game, not caring that his health bar was decreasing rapidly.
"that's cool." he commented, before looking back down at his phone. hanako couldn't help but look over at him, studying the way the setting sun flooded his features. he looked ethereal.
sadly for her, he noticed her staring, and decided to say something while their friends were talking. "is everything okay?" he asked gently, causing her to jump and look away.
"yeah." hanako nodded. why does he keep asking me that?
kenma didn't know how else to talk to her. how do you talk to someone who doesn't want to talk to you? she was practically radiating "i-don't-want-to-be-here."
"hey, saito." kuroo started, making hanako look up before she realised he was talking to katsuo. "how come you know your way around so well?"
honestly, kenma had been wondering that too. it had been their first day, and they'd only moved here a month ago, yet he acted like he'd lived here his whole life. he had even memorised the train times. katsuo smiled lopsidedly, "i guess i've got a great memory."
that wasn't it. not at all. his smile was kind of weary, but it wasn't kenma's place to say anything. as they were waiting for the train, hanako felt inclined to say something to kenma. she wanted to.
