"could you accompany me?"

after class, katsuo immediately made his way over to his sister's side, waving off those who incessantly attempted to speak to him. this small act gained kenma's respect as he realised he cared more of his sister's happiness than his own.

"hey." he said lowly, perching on her desk as she shouldered her bag.

"hi." she whispered, fiddling with her thumbs as she delayed saying more, so the girls waiting for him could leave. it was making her uncomfortable. noticing this, katsuo turned around with that signature smile of his.

"girls, while i'm flattered, i'm actually busy right now. i'll see you all later though!" he said, giving them a wave as they pouted and trailed out of the room.

"thank you." she breathed. her brother swung an arm over her shoulders and squeezed her gently.

"it wasn't that bad, right?" he asked, and she nodded her head solemnly, making him laugh. "chin up, buttercup. come on, we have to sign up for clubs. you're doing music, right?"

"yeah." she said, finally showing some level of excitement as her eyes gleamed slightly. kenma, still waiting for kuroo, saw her smile a little. she looks better when she smiles. more at peace.

"hm." katsuo tapped his fingers against his chin in a teasing manner, mirth dancing in his eyes. "do you think you're good enough for them to accept you?"

huffing, she poked at him stomach, taking pride in the way his ticklish abdomen practically leaped away from her touch. "i'm better than you."

"that's because i stopped playing after a year! it's boring." the taller boy whined, defending himself.

"it's not boring, you just have a short attention span." hanako giggled at her brother's shocked expression.

"excuse me? i'm not the one who fell asleep during mr takeda's lecture on literature last year. the poor man was so worried he wasn't interesting enough for you." her laughter stopped as her eyes widened.

"hey! i loved mr takeda - and literature! you're the one who kept me up until three in the morning because you couldn't beat me at mario kart. so, it wasn't even my fault."

kenma's ears pricked up when the game was mentioned. he had been listening to the entire conversation - he couldn't help it. he liked how serene hanako was when she was alone with her brother.

well, alone with her brother with the addition of kenma sitting silently at his desk. he didn't think they'd noticed him, until they left to go to the office. on their way out, katsuo spoke to him.
