"and just like that, a new emotion was unlocked."
things were...uncomfortable. that would be the only decent way to describe the way hanako and kenma waited in silence for kuroo to arrive. it didn't particularly bother hanako, her line of sight drifted to the trees outside as she zoned out, completely oblivious to kenma's awkward shuffling.
usually, he'd either pull out his phone or his psp. however, he had invited hanako, and he felt obligated, in a sense, to make her happy. clearing his throat, he gained her attention. "wanna leave without him?" he asked, clutching his phone as he tapped his fingers along the case.
blinking at him, she tilted her head to the side. as she opened her mouth, the words practically died on her tongue. it was very difficult to talk to him alone. thankfully, she managed a few words. "what about kuroo-san?"
shaking his head dismissively, kenma slid out of his seat and picked up his bag. "i'll text him to meet us. he's probably too deep into talking about atomic structure with his teacher or something." the setter mumbled, emitting a gentle, and rare smile from the brunette.
"okay." she agreed, silently following him out of the room. the two passed by many people on their way out, some of which even greeted kenma in passing. although it gained her unecessary attention, hanako couldn't help but be amused by the way kenma's right eye twitched in irritation each time someone spoke to him.
when they'd reached the tree, they found a boy already sitting there, and the saito girl suppressed a laugh at the groan that left kenma. "why are you here?" he asked the boy, in a bored, monotone voice. the annoyance that clearly coated his tone was undeniable, but the silver-haired skyscraper payed it no mind.
grinning, he stood up, making both kenma and hanako feel extremely inferior. he peered down at the latter, face extremely close as he analysed her. "hi! i'm lev haiba! our eyes are the same colour. who are you?" lev remained in his position, seemingly not affected by his close proximity with hanako.
kenma was close to pushing him out of the way before the saito girl nodded at him. "my name is hanako saito. it's nice to meet you, haiba-san." she spoke earnestly, surprising kenma. it reminded him of when she thanked him on her first day of school.
lev, having only just met the girl, didn't see her behaviour as unusual, and continued to talk. "say, hanako," he started, using her first name casually, "are you a first year?" during their brief interaction, hanako had decided she liked lev. people like him tend not to judge.
shaking her head, she smiled bashfully, scrunching her nose up at him. "why? it's because i'm short, isn't it?" she pouted teasingly, folding her arms over her torso. watching the scene before him play out, kenma's expression had been set to incredulous. he'd never seen her so at ease. in all honesty, it made him feel slightly jealous of the big idiot who'd invaded his lunch spot.
