The investigation had been a blessing in disguise.
Until I heard the offical announce that I was playing in the championship game, my stomach began an epic battle between the knots and the butterflies.
I was playing in a statewide championship game in two days.
This thought occurred to me when I was sitting in English class after we got back.
Kenz hadn't been able to make it to the hearing, but I filled in her the moment I set foot inside the door.
"What happened?" She appeared from the stairwell that was right outside the main door to the school.
"Holy shit." Matt said, laughing and giving her a hug.
"Yeah apparently best friend and head cheerleader isn't enough to warrant an excused morning." She said, rolling her eyes and falling in step with us.
"Sparknotes version... Britt was accused of preferential treatment, Coach yelled a lot, they rethought the decision, she's cleared." Luke explained.
"What?!" She said, "That is not a Sparknote version worthy event!"
The boys took a left down the math hallway and I continued to fill Kenz in on what happened.
"So you are playing in the biggest football event this year." She grinned.
"I guess I am." I laughed, moving out of the way of two kissing juniors.
"And ESPN is covering it." She added.
We found that out last week, but it hadn't really registered during the investigation.
And now I am sitting in English class on the verge of a mental breakdown.
Brrrrring!
I got up and Kenz walked over to me.
"You look like you just saw a ghost. Is it about Nick at the hearing. I feel like that's totally explainable." She said, opening the door to the classroom for me.
"What?" I hadn't even talked to Nick at the hearing.
"Hey!" She said to a girl from the cheerleading team.
"You know," She focused her attention on me. "He hasn't told the team about you."
She stopped at her locker and grabbed her history book for our next class.
"He hasn't?" I asked. I tried to remember if I had told my own team. I didn't remember making an announcement, but Matt and Luke knew and I never denied it.
"You didn't know?" She asked as her face turned from confusion to shock.
"Oh gosh. Britt I thought you knew. I feel so stupid." She said, closing her locker.
"Why do you feel stupid?" Matt asked, walking over and wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
"Did you not tell Britt?" She said, snapping from supportive best friend to angry girlfriend.
This girl has been giving me whiplash since we met in kindergarten.
"Tell Britt what?" He asked.
"That Nick didn't tell his team about me." I said.
"Well I don't know that. I told Kenz in confidence that he was acting weird around the topic of you after the hearing." He said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Well the topic of us knowing each other came up and instead of saying that he is hanging out with you and us he told the half truth and said he was at a game." He explained while we all walked to our history class.
