"Taking a break?"
Retsuko nodded, and Haida followed her down the hall to the cafeteria. He'd been keeping a careful eye on her ever since what happened.
She was much quieter now. Not that she was very talkative before, but now the silence had become even more overwhelming.
"Want some coffee?" Haida gestured to the vending machine. "I'll pay."
"You don't have to, I have my own money- I paid off my debt, remember? I can just buy my own."
'That's not the point, dammit!' Haida hid his annoyed expression, popping two coins into the vending machine before Retsuko could interject.
"I- I was perfectly fine buying my own, Haida!" Now Retsuko was the annoyed one.
"You can make it up to me the next time we get coffee, kay?" He smiled at her, and they both sat down to talk and drink the coffee they'd just bought.
One day they'd be buying coffee in a better place, a cafe, maybe for a date, maybe not. Maybe they'd be talking and laughing the whole time, maybe they'd be complaining about work. Either way, the future didn't seem to want to come. But he'd wait, and work his way to that future.
