CHAPTER XVIII (SECRETS AND AFFAIRS)
When I arrived at Dimitri's place, they were nowhere to be found. I only assumed that Nikolai and him just went out and bought some supplies needed for the travel. Not until the door burst open and found Christian standing in the doorway with a serious look on his face.
"We need to leave. Now." Although his voice sounded calm and collected there was an underlying urgency in his voice.
"What's happening? What's wrong Christian? Where's Dimitri?" I asked. I was getting scared. The little courage I had left earlier was nowhere to be felt. My hands and knees where shaking. I was still fidgeting when another person arrive at the door with the same urgency that Christian had.
"We need to go." He said.
"Christian tell me what's wrong?" I demanded
"I'll tell you on the way. But for now we have to get out of here. Trust me on this one Anya. You will be safe and will arrive in Paris in one piece." I never got to answer him because he grabbed my hand and gave me a heavy coat and some hat. "Cover your face with this and make sure you don't attract too much attention"
I rolled my eyes. Attract attention?? Of course I'd attract attention, I look suspicious. But I never told him that. "Where are the boys?" I asked again.
"They're safe. You don't have to worry about them." He replied.
When we arrived at the end of the hall , I understood the urgency. The Royal Guards were here. They were checking everyone that went out of the building.
"Shit" I heard Christian say. "Take the coat off and the hat and put down your hair." I did not question what he said. My heart was hammering hard in my chest. But then when we were 5 people away from the guards, Christian ripped my skirt off leaving the length a bit too short for me.
"What are you doing?!" I hysterically asked.
"Shush" He replied.
When it was our turn, Christian placed his arm around my shoulders as the guards were examining our things. But what made me freeze was that, one of the guards were looking straight at me. I can totally see recognition in his eyes.
"You have a pretty one there lad. Would it be so much trouble to borrow her for awhile?" The guard said. I was already panicking. Christians hold in my shoulder tightened. I can sense that he was trying so hard to not say a thing that would piss the guard off. Fortunately, the pervert guard was called by the others and we were let go.
I looked back. But still the creepy guard was still staring at me. I know he recognized me, but I do not know him. I've never even saw him before.
"Eyes ahead princess" Christian whispered.
We got into a carriage and it rode a little far off north. When we were on the end of the northern road, I can see two silhouettes in the foggy dark. I opened the door to the carriage and found Dimitri's tantalizing eyes staring right back at mine. Nikolai was right beside him.
"We're sorry that we weren't able to warn you ahead my dear. We waited for you by the streets. But it was already too late. You were within the guards eyesight, it would've caused trouble if we were seen with you." Said Nikolai
"What is exactly happening?"
"We will tell you once you're settled. But we will apologize in advance for the place that we will be staying tonight might trigger some memories you would not want to be remembered." Dimitri voiced out
"Let's go" said Christian
I barely moved my feet when I saw where we were heading. Yes this place isn't Ipatiev, but it still has the memories that would pierce one's heart. So I placed my walls up. I did not have a choice, or so it seemed. They've made decisions again without even consulting me.
