Stevie struggled to pull away as Lindsey was holding her to himself. "You let me comfort you for hours! I thought you were going through this and taking it really hard, that you needed me right now so much! You weren't even going to tell me, were you?"
"Let me explain!"
"What's there to explain? You can't keep your dick in your pants! Only one of us just isn't enough for you!"
"Stevie, I want..."
"After all these years I keep falling for your lies! Maybe he's changed? Maybe he's actually grown up?"
"Let me..."
"Why do you keep hurting me? Why would you keep telling me that we still have a chance?"
She wasn't going to shut up, so he covered her mouth with the palm of his hand causing her to widen her eyes. Once her breathing started to even out, he began talking. "You should learn to listen. The baby Kristen is carrying isn't mine." The expression on her face told him she didn't understand. "I was going to explain, but you kept shouting at me."
"But... how?"
"Lots of things happened in the past year or so." He sighed and sat up straight, his back against the headboard. "Nobody knows any of it."
"Lindsey, you have to tell me, because I'm so lost right now." She switched on the bedside lamp and turned towards him, sitting cross legged.
"She was seeing someone for a while."
"Kristen was cheating on you?"
He merely nodded. It was obvious to Stevie that his manly ego was sorely bruised. "She knew about us, she said she felt alone and unwanted. She met someone with whom she sort of replaced me. She told me about it herself. We got into this huge argument... I was so mad, not that I had any right to be like that, after all I was with you behind her back."
"Did you know for long?"
"I found out around half a year later. She said the guilt was eating her up, that she couldn't keep living with it, that she didn't understand how do I do it... I told her that the difference is that I love you and even though I get it it's so wrong, I can't stop seeing you."
"How does she know the baby really isn't yours?" He knew that's the only part she cared about.
"Maybe because I haven't slept with her forever?"
"You haven't?" The knowledge made her feel good, that in a way he was faithful to her, despite how ridiculous it sounded.
"Do you honestly need to ask me that, Stevie? When I'm with you, I can't contain myself from excitement of being around you. I want to touch you and kiss you, and have you all to myself, but when I'm with her... I have to force myself to want her and it just... Nothings happens." He finished, looking away.
"When did you found out about it?"
"When I came home for the break from the tour. It was the next day, I think, she told me. The father apperantly doesn't want to be a father, so he ran off. It wasn't something I thought I was going to be welcomed home with. Her exact words were 'we're having a baby'. My heart stopped beating for a moment, but then she added 'I hope'. Needless to say, I didn't understand anything. We sat down and talked for hours. She said that she can't do this by herself, she doesn't want to. She had already scheduled an appointment, saying that she won't attend it only if I agree to be the father to that baby..."
"And you did." She said matter-of-factly.
"What was I going to say? Kristen, I think you should go and terminate the pregnancy?"
"You've told me that before..."
"Let's not get into that now."
"Couldn't you tell her to do what she feels is right? You don't have to be a hero always, Lindsey. You ask me to wait until your kids are old enough, this baby isn't even born yet, I'm going to have to wait for what, like... another twenty years? I'll be dead by then!"
"Don't be so overly dramatic."
"Why did you tell me you were going to file for divorce when you came to see me on Christmas? You already knew she was pregnant."
"I don't know, Stevie, and I mean it. We had such an amazing time that evening, you looked so beautiful and things were just perfect."
"So, you decided the best thing would be lying to me again?"
"I didn't know what I was saying..."
"Oh, so you did lie!" She yelled then fell silent.
The silence was becoming unbearable and he hadn't yet said everything. "She also... Kristen said that she would forgive me my infidelity if I forgot about hers, that we could remain being a family, bring up another child together."
"I think you should just leave, Lindsey. Your life is pretty fucking perfect! You keep screwing me, but your wife fucked some other guy too, so she decided that she can overlook it this time. Congrats, you have a wonderful woman by your side! I'm not sure why you would ever need me."
"You know why I'm with you."
"But you're not with me! That's the thing!"
"Don't be like this, baby..."
"Lindsey, you can't 'baby' me and expect me to forgive you. If I were you, I would forget about me. Yeah, you might not have great feeling for her, but you've been married for years, you have kids, you have a family, Linds. That has to be good enough. Trust me, this is coming from someone, who has nothing."
"You have me."
"That's another lie."
"I don't want you to be alone, Steph. It hurts me seeing you alone."
"Whose fault is that? Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic, but I can't be with someone who I feel nothing for. I want to be with the person that completes me, that is my other half and that is you, but I can't have you."
"Wait for me a little bit longer, until the baby is here. I promise you..."
"You have promised me that before, Lindsey. How can I believe you?"
"I mean it this time, from the bottom of my heart, just wait for me, okay?" He cradled her face in both his hands and placed a kiss on her lips. "This is the last time I'm asking you this. Just wait for me..."
"I've waited for a couple of decades, can't see why it should be any different now."
"Thank you."
"But if you're lying to me again..."
"I'm not, I swear to you, I'm not."
"Kiss me, make love to me... Do anything. Please... I... I need you, badly."
He drew her face closer to his and she was more than willing to respond to his kiss.
