Soul marks had always felt like a leash for Luke Patterson. He was always a go against the grain kind of guy but in this case it felt like he was just chained to something..... well, someone without choice or reason. To say the least, Luke Patterson made his own choices in every other part of life, so he wasn't about to let the universe tell him who to love.

The stress of soul marks, for Luke, had been particularly suffocating lately. Alex and Reggie had gotten their soul marks and Alex had met his soulmate, Willie, recently after that. Alex and Willie were so happy and Luke was happy for them. But it didn't change his mind and his stress was turned up every time someone asked if he had gotten his mark yet. Luke hadn't been marked yet, and while he wasn't torn up about it, he certainly didn't want everyone around him acting like he was some alien for not having it yet. It's not like there was an exact rule for marks. Whenever the universe believed you were ready, you got a small tattoo of the first words that your soulmate would say to you. After that, it was just meeting them and living happily ever after.... blah blah blah. Luke thought it was all ridiculous, and besides, he wasn't focused on girls. Luke just wanted to take his band to the next level and he didn't have time for a soulmate.

Luke met Alex and Reggie at their lockers before their last class, which they all shared. It was the only class that Luke actually liked, it was Music. Lucky for Luke, their school had a music program that him and the boys were in together. The class was pretty cool and he liked being able to let some of his passion free during school hours. Alex dabbed him up, "Hey, man. How was Chemistry?"

"It was same old boring Chem. I just need a boost of creativity in my life after that. Ready to get to Music."

"Bro, same. Hopefully Mrs. Harrison has a fun assignment for us today." Reggie slipped in before heading to class unusually happy and Luke should have thought it was weird but something dragged his attention.

Willie came up behind Alex, "Hey, handsome. I wanted to drop in before my art class."

"Hey," Alex said turning to give Willie a kiss on the cheek, "I missed you too."

"Ugh, get a room would ya," Luke teased with a smile. Alex responded with a roll of his eyes before turning to Willie again.

Luke decided to let the two love birds have a moment alone, and headed to class without Alex. Luke sneaked a glance back at his friend as he walked to class but suddenly had the feeling of someone on his chest and whipped around to catch the girl who he'd stumbled into. He grabbed her waist before she could trip and his breath caught in his throat when their eyes met.

Luke had seen her before, she was kind of shy and didn't talk much and she was in the music program. This, was Julie Molina. Luke didn't pay much attention to rumors in school but he'd heard a bit about Julie Molina's overwhelming loss last year. His mind was about to catch up with just how innocently beautiful she looked just then until she opened her mouth to say something, and his eye flicked to the tear marks on her cheek.

Comments: This chapter is pretty short but is what it is. Hopefully the next one will be longer.
