"I- I'm sorry, I didn't see you. I should've been paying attention. I'm sorry." her words came out quick and nervous, like she might cry of embarrassment.
Julie hadn't been paying attention while walking to Music and she had crashed into the one and only.....Luke Patterson. She had been freaking out about being an inch away from getting kicked from the music program.
"No, it's my fault. I wasn't watching where I was going." he said with an unusual warmth in his tone.
Julie looked at him and he gave her an apologetic smile like he was sorry for more than just bumping into her. That's when she remembered that she had been crying and she felt her face grow hot with embarrassment. She wanted nothing more than to crawl in a hole and never have to look at him again.
Julie hadn't realized that her hands were still caught on his arms, right above his elbows and his still on her waist from catching her fall. Her stomach flipped but she met his gaze and he seemed to realize it at the same time. He let go slowly, almost reluctantly, to set her feet steady and flat on the ground as oppose to on her tiptoes like she'd been. She releases his arms and their eyes hold an intense gaze that Julie wishes she could run from but she can't take her eyes off of him.
A throat cleared behind her and Julie broke the eye contact to turn and face Mrs. Harrison who seemed to have seen their whole encounter go down. She shot them both a knowing look and Julie ducked her head and walked into the classroom to leave Luke Patterson and his stupid eyes behind her......so she thought.
Julie didn't look back at Luke until she'd found her seat beside Flynn. When she did, he snapped his eyes away from her and she caught the light blush on his cheeks. Had Luke-- hot senior guitar player-- Patterson just been staring at her? She pulled her eyes to Mrs. Harrison and tried to push him out of her thoughts to listen to the lesson. Mrs. Harrison's class went by relatively quickly and there were only a few minutes left until Julie could go home and forget about today' events and Luke-
"We will be starting a group project," Mrs. Harrison's voice cut off Julie's thoughts, "and I have chosen your groups for you." There was a collective groan from the class and Mrs. Harrison chuckled. "Alright, alright," she threw her hands up defensively, "the point of this project is to get everyone out of their comfort zones. You and your group or partner will be writing and performing an original song for the class." Julie felt her stomach drop. She still hadn't performed since her mom died and this would most likely be the last chance before she was kicked out for not participating.
"The first group is Flynn and Carrie." Julie's eyebrows shot up and she looked at Flynn who looked like she was gonna murder Carrie. Julie shot Flynn a half smile while she went to go sit by Carrie. Mrs. Harrison named a few more groups and Julie started to wonder who's burden she was gonna be.
"Julie, you're with Alex, Luke and Reggie." Mrs. Harrison smiled and continued her list of groups.
Julie froze for a second before Reggie waved her over, beaming at her. She picked up her things and moved to sit with them. Unfortunately, the only seat was in between Luke and Alex. Julie sat down and Alex broke the silence first, THANK GOD.
"So, Julie if you don't mind, we could exchange numbers and start a group chat." Alex smiled at her and Julie thought that she already liked him.
"Sure, that sounds good." Julie took out her phone and they all started a group chat just before the bell rang. Julie packed up her stuff and gave the boys a smile. She got a smile back from Luke that made her heart skip before she turned and found Flynn.
Flynn flung an arm over Julie as they left the class. "So how was it with the hot rock band?" Flynn said with a grin. "Haha. We just started a group chat to figure out a good time to work on the project." Julie answered hoping to sound nonchalant. However, Flynn's attention had been caught. "You have their numbers?!" Julie rolled her eyes and tried to change the subject, "Well how was it with Carrie?" Julie wiggled her eyebrows and Flynn's face dropped to an expression of pure hatred. Julie chuckled, "That bad?" Flynn scoffed, "She thinks that I'm just gonna drop any good ideas and bow to her. She is NOT about to turn me into some Dirty Candy power puff girl." Flynn said rolling her eyes. Julie laughed and they continued to their lockers.
