"If I told you, Captain," the man spoke with a tone that made you stand on edge, "it wouldn't be very fun now, would it?" He took a few steps forward, towards you and the soldiers You instinctively took your arm out of Bucky's grasp and put your hands out in front of you, ready to summon your knives. The man clicked his tongue, shaking his head. "One false move, [Y/N], and you could bid all your friends goodbye. I don't want to harm your gang of freaks, so don't compel me to."
You put your hands down in fear of doing anything to cause harm to your friends. They were more than friends after all. They were the closest thing you had to family. Even the thought alone of you doing something irrational and causing pain to them made you sick to your stomach.
"What do you want?" Your voice was steady and firm, not reflecting how you actually felt. The voice inside of you screamed with fear as you gulped.
"Got straight to the point, [Y/N]," he said happily, smiling sweetly. The man creeped you out as it was, but his smile made it worse. His smile quickly disappeared as his face fell serious "You." The timing of the lightning was impeccable. Bucky's hand reached out to yours, taking it into his. You looked back at him with pleading eyes. His eyes screamed for you not to trust the man but you needed to know that your friends were fine. That Bucky was fine. If it came to your safety, you had no problem putting yourself at risk.
Steve stood aside, letting Bucky and you have your moment. He wasn't going to watch you leave either. He could see right through the man. The man wasn't to be trusted with your life or the deal he was trying to make. He didn't want you to trade your life for anyone else. Steve didn't trade lives. He was looking for a loophole as Bucky and you had your silent talk. His mind jumbled up in the process before he could come up with another choice. He could place a tracker or two on you. He could try to bargain with the man. He could try to ambush him. He could kill him right here, but the idea went down the drain as he remembered that Natasha, Vision, Wanda, and Sam were trained enough to handle one guy so that would mean that there were more people.
His mind turned gears, finding solutions and consequences. It had become a habit of his to think everything through, even the things he didn't want to think about. He gradually came up with many choices in less than a minute. He ran a hand through his hair as he looked back at you and Bucky.
"Don't," Bucky whispered, tears welling up in his eyes. You wanted to look away but you knew if you did, he wouldn't do as you said.
"Stay here. Don't do anything stupid. Take care of yourself and the others." You watched as he realized what you were saying. His grip tightened immensely, making your hand hurt but you didn't dare say anything.
"No, you're not going anywhere."
"You heard him."
"I did."
"Then why are you making this so difficult?" You hissed, trying to twist your hand out of his.
"We don't trade lives, remember?" The thought had crossed your mind but either way, you were trading lives. Whether it was you or the others, you were going to have to trade lives or a life.
"If I don't do this, four people die and probably more," you whispered, letting your eyes well up with tears too. "I'm sorry but I have to." You turned your head to Steve, giving him a pleading look. His face only showed determination and you knew that you weren't going to be able to go anywhere. "Fine, I won't go." You watched as the man smirked and left the building without a problem.
You yanked your hand out of Bucky's and stormed out of the kitchen, towards your room. Bucky was about to follow you, but Steve grabbed his arm and dragged him to the briefing room, the opposite way of which he wanted to go. As much as he wanted to go after you, he felt that you wouldn't talk to him or Steve and Steve might have something important to say.
In the briefing room, Bucky sat across from Steve as Steve fumbled with some files.
"FRIDAY, tell [Y/N] to get her ass down here, whether she wants to or not," Steve requested, using the authority tone of his.
"Right away, Mr. Rogers." FRIDAY's voice echoed around the room before the duo heard a loud voice in the distance, using a string load of profanities.
Bucky sighed knowing that it was you and you only swore this much when you were angry and irritated. As you got closer, your volume decreased until you were sitting and cursing under your breath. Bucky could hear some of the ugly words you said and it wasn't pleasant. He knew that you would be mad at him for a few days, if he was lucky, only a few hours. It was hard for you to remain angry at anyone, making it easy for others to apologize for their mistakes. It was one of the reasons that brought you pain from the ones you loved the most. Bucky hated it but couldn't because then you wouldn't have forgiven him for all the things he did.
Steve tossed a few files and books onto the table before telling FRIDAY to contact Tony since you guys would need all the help you could get. You stopped mumbling and took a file from the stack, opening it in front of you.
Bucky took one file and noticed the Hydra sign. His mind started turning as he flipped it open and looked at the man. It was the same man that was here to take you and took the other Avengers. As he read through the file, his stomach started turning and tossing at the horrible things the man had done. His mind was filled with frightening images as the man's deeds were described. His eyes darted up at Steve who put his hand out for the file. Steve's eyes danced around the page before he spoke urgently.
"We need a plan and fast."
