CHAPTER TWELVE
( brown eyed girl )THE PLACE THAT WAS TECHNICALLY DEEMED AURORA'S HOME WAS BUSTLING WITH ACTIVITY AND packed with a dozen lowlifes as it always was this time of day. An older man— clearly drunk, or high, or both— sprawled disorderly out on a lawn chair sitting on her uncut grass cat-called her obnoxiously as she walked by; gray vapor billowing out of his nose as a smoldering cigarette rested between his crusty fingers.
"Come here, doll! Come over here like a good girl." he slurred, his voice low and cacophonous as his red rimmed eyes followed the teenage girl.
Her stride didn't cease, nor did she ever glance in his direction as she continued on. A thick cloud of smoke engulfed her as soon as she trudged up the rickety steps and inside the beat up, worn down, paint-chipped trailer; eager to get this over with. Her eyes stung in the hazy environment, coughing at the strong aroma of weed and burnt cocaine. She swatted her hand in front of her face in attempts to alleviate at least some of the unpleasant fog she choked on. She knew the longer she stayed here, the stronger the second hand high would inevitably be.
She swallowed uneasily when a sorely familiar man stumbled into view, his drunken hazel eyes suggestively scanning her; the foul stench of alcohol steaming from his hot breath as he tripped closer to her. Aurora crossed her arms over her chest and hunched her shoulders, uncomfortably shifting her body away from him with a disgusted scowl. Every time she dared to show her face here, men of all ages seemed to flock to her like she were magnetic; Aurora not typically phased by their words or actions. When it came to the man she was shrinking away from now, however, it had always made nausea brew in the pit of her stomach. It felt like some sort of betrayal to her best friend, even though she knew she was doing nothing wrong.
"Luke Maybank, just who I wanted to see." she grimaced, sour sarcasm smothering each word leaving her lips; the girl not bothering to mask the outwardly sickened look on her scrunched up features.
Luke took another few unsteady steps towards her, backing her against a wall. A breathy, malicious chuckle exhaled from his chapped lips; arms placed out against the wall on either side of her. Aurora quickly ducked underneath his arm and shoved him the rest of the way out the front door with an annoyed groan, the man having been heading that way before he had gotten distracted by her.
"Hey, baby sis! You decide to join the party?" a familiar voice rang out, Aurora turning with indignant eyes to face him.
"I told you not to fucking call me that, Barry." she rebuked sharp-tongued, her tone bitter and firm towards the older boy; who was rising to his feet and sauntering over to her.
