CHAPTER FOURTEEN
( keep calm and carry on )

AURORA'S HEART POUNDED IN HER TIGHTENED CHEST, her throat tightening. She gaped at the wealthy woman, brain struggling to process the accusation as fast as she should, had she been innocent. But of course, she wasn't innocent.

"You're the only one besides Ingrid and I who have access to that section of the house, and Ingrid isn't tall enough to reach my bathroom countertops." Ms. Roberts spoke; tense arms crossed angrily, eyes shooting daggers at the teenage girl.

"Someone must of come in then." Aurora shook her head.

"I checked the security footage and no one entered the house during that time. The jewelry was there before I left that day, and gone when I came back."

"Maybe-"

"I know it was you, Aurora." she impatiently cut her off; strained voice laced with outrage.

The Pogue stared at her for a moment longer, slowly crumbling before the woman; knowing no fib would be bought from her employer right now.

"I'm sorry!" she suddenly gushed, admitting wholeheartedly to her thievery as Ms. Roberts let out a furious scoff. "I needed the money so badly, and I just-"

"You're fired."

She froze for a long instant, her mouth hung agape and her increasingly panicked eyes wide. "Please, please, please don't fire me!" she vehemently beseeched, resorting to begging as she rushed a few steps forward to clasp desperately onto Ms. Robert's hands.

"I need this job, and I won't do anything like that ever again, I swear! I'll work extra hours for free and-and, I'll do extra responsibilities, I can-"

The woman harshly tore her hands away, her face painted a shade of angered red as a hefty scowl highlighted her features; Aurora no fool to the pure hatred in her eyes in this moment.

"You're fired!" she repeated, not affected by the girl's frantic begging; her volume rising. "And you should be thankful for all that I've given you and that I'm not going to the cops! I could be make your life miserable if I wanted to."

"Please, I need this job." Aurora whispered despondently, a frail last-ditch effort to salvage her work.

"Everyone here told me not to trust anyone that lives on the Cut, and I didn't listen because I felt bad for you. I thought you were just a child who didn't have a choice in the cards she'd been dealt. But now I see that you choose a life of crime, and I know that you are old enough to know right from wrong." Her voice hardened further, if that was even possible. "You're garbage. Just like they warned me you would be. Now get out of my house."
