After we arrive and get seated, Dom reaches out his hands for mine across the table, "So, how did the funeral go?" he asks.
"It was good until Nate showed up. In true Nate fashion, he started to make a scene and tried to get me to leave with him. I kept telling him to go away, but he was persistent. Earl and my brother were going to step in until you showed up, and I left with you."
"I did see your ex there. He didn't seem very happy when you left with me. I could see it all over his face." he responded.
I roll my eyes, "Yes, he doesn't seem to get the hint. First of all, that was not the appropriate time nor place to do that, and second of all, his words mean very little to me."
"I am still trying to figure out why a girl as beautiful as you are would waste your time on someone like him. He is not very respectful of women; I could tell that when I saw him at the pizza place."
I snickered, "You got that right."
Dom squeezes my hand a little tighter, "Something else is bothering you. I can tell."
A look of shock crosses my face. How is he able to read me so well? Before I can answer, the waitress greets us, handing the menus to us before taking our drink order. After she leaves, I continue, "Well, my best friend Brie was there. I haven't seen the girl in four years because she's been away at school. The first day she comes to town, she decides to get coffee with my brother's best friend. It makes no sense to me. I felt like she could have at least talked to me after the funeral. She even told me that we would catch up afterward."
"Well, you will need to tell her how you feel when you see her. If she is a good friend, she will understand your frustration and apologize," he responds reassuringly.
"I probably won't even say anything to her."
He narrows his eyes at me, "You should let people know when they hurt you. Otherwise, they will continue to hurt you unknowingly. You are too nice, and people will walk all over you. You don't deserve that."
I sigh audibly, "I know you are right; it's just hard to do. I hate conflict."
He crosses his arms in front of his chest, his eyes boring a hole through me, "I will break you of this habit. I will also get you to sing in front of people."
My eyes grow wide; my heart begins racing. I turn my head away from him to avoid eye contact as I cringe from the thought, "Oh no...no...no...I can't do that, Dom. Please don't make me do that. I am way too shy."
"Yes, Maggie. You will sing for me every night until you are comfortable. I will enjoy it very much. You should share your talent with the world."
I sit back in the booth and place my hands over my face and shake my head from side to side before answering, "Every night?"
He nods his head, his eyes never leaving mine, "Yes, every night..."
"So does this mean we are together? Is this what we are doing? Are we dating exclusively?" I ask curiously.
"I would like to be together, yes. There is one thing you need to know about me first," he responds.
I snort and place my head in my hands, "Oh my God. Please don't tell me you are married."
"Oh no! I am divorced for sure. It is something personal about me. It's what caused my divorce in the first place."
I slowly lower my hands to my lap as a shiver runs down my spine. My mind begins to race, "What do you mean?"
He runs his hand through his hair, "Well, I think you should know before you decide to be with me that I had cancer. I had a brain tumor removed over a year ago and underwent a round of chemotherapy."
