You spent the next week with Bucky at your side, he never left you for long. He learnt more about himself and you, and was starting to talk to you more. He still didn't talk to the others much but they didn't mind. George loved spending time with him and you felt so happy for the first time in a long time. You finally had Bucky back.
"Hey Y/n," said Tony, coming into the kitchen, you looked away from him from where George was teaching Bucky how to play video games. Bucky was completely confused by technology and it was so adorable omg.
"Yeah," you said, pouring coffee into a mug, you could hear George's laugh and your heart did a little flip. It must have been hard for Bucky, trying to become a parent in such a short space of time, especially since George spent so much time with Bucky. But Bucky was amazing with George and seeing George get so close to him made you fill with happiness.
"We're going on a mission tomorrow," said Tony, in the background of your thoughts, "Some of the team will be here but are you okay here on your own?"
"Yeah," you said, not looking away from Bucky and George.
Later that day, the team were getting ready for a mission, you were baking cookies, and George and Bucky were helping you. Despite everything you'd been through, this felt weirdly normal, like you were a proper family. George was throwing tiny handfuls of flour at Bucky's leg and he chased him round the kitchen. His high pitched screaming echoing through the kitchen. Bucky had this huge smile plastered to his face, and the twinkle that you'd seen his eyes, the day he proposed to you, was back.
"Will you guys stop," you said playfully as George ran into your leg. You were still smiling though, you'd never seen George this happy before. Placing the cookies in the oven, you began to clean up the mess of flour all over the kitchen. Bucky helped you, a smile still on his face. You'd never seen him smile as much as he did when he was with George, not that you remembered.
Just as you were taking the cookies out of the oven, and Peter and George were watching tv, you heard Bucky come into the kitchen. "Hey Buck," you said as he sat down on the kitchen island stool.
"Y/n can I ask you something?" he said seriously, the smile he had on his face just a few minutes earlier was gone.
"Sure," you said, slightly nervous.
"Can I take you on a date?" he asked you. Almost dropping the cookies your heart flipped in your chest. When you turned round he had a lopsided smile on his face and the twinkle in his blue eyes made your heart beat faster, you'd been waiting so long for him to ask you, but just accepted he would want everything to stay as it was.
"Yes of course," you said, "I would love to,"
"Can I take you out tonight?" he said. Tony, Sam and Steve were on a mission but Nat and Peter wouldn't mind watching George for you.
"Tonight's perfect," you said, "Make sure George doesn't eat these while they're hot, I need to find Nat," you were so excited, your stomach was filled with butterflies. Bucky watched you leave, a smile on his face.
Bucky POV:
Y/n had spent the rest of the afternoon in her room, and I was starting to get nervous that she didn't actually want to go on a date with me. Steve, who I would have gone to help for, was gone so I asked the next best person, Tony's 'intern' Peter. He'd given me date ideas, between pop culture references that I didn't understand. I decided against telling Y/n where we were going, so that it would be a surprise.
I saw Nat, Y/n's best friend, coming down the corridor and waited for her to follow. It was November already, and so getting dark when it wasn't even late yet. I was getting impatient to start the date but I'd waited a week to ask Y/n out, I could wait a bit longer. "Is she ready?" I asked.
"Where are you taking her?" said Nat, sitting down on the chair next to where George was playing with his train set.
"Out," I said, glancing at Peter, who was frantically typing on his phone. I wasn't really sure if I was supposed to tell Nat, but I didn't want to ruin the surprise. Steve had told me in the 40s I was always taking girls on dates, yet here I was not being able to take the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen on a date because I was too nervous.
"Where?" said Nat, "She won't know what to wear otherwise,"
"I don't want to spoil it," I said, hoping at some point Peter would say something so I wouldn't sound so stupid. "She'll look beautiful in anything," I added, hoping that it would lighten the situation.
"Skirt? Dress? Trousers?" she said, "Formal? Casual?"
I was totally confused by all these options, I didn't realise there were so many. I just wanted Y/n to wear something she felt pretty in, because she was always beautiful, even when I ran into her in the kitchen at 3am after a nightmare. "Um," I looked over to Peter, who wasn't even listening to the conversation and could see Nat smirk.
"Not good at this Barnes?" she asked, "You're asking a teenager for help," it was true but it still annoyed me. I wanted to be good at this, I wanted to be able to take Y/n on the perfect date and to be the perfect boyfriend. I just had no idea how to those things. And I didn't want to hurt her.
"Whatever she likes best," I said, "Tell her that," she shrugged and left the room. I hoped I'd said the right thing, I didn't want to mess this date up before I'd even seen her.
When I heard voices in the corridor I jumped up from the chair I was sat in. Nervous on seeing Y/n I pushed the hair from my face and tried to breathe normally. Nat came in first and winked at me. Y/n came into the living room, a smile on her face and she looked stunning, as she always did. "Wow," I said softly, before realising she'd heard me.
"Is this okay for the date?" she asked me, "Or do I need to change?" her hair was curled loosely around her shoulders and she was wearing a short black dress and a black jacket and heels. She looked so beautiful, my heart was racing in my chest.
"No you look perfect," I said, "I'm so lucky," it wasn't a lie.
"Okay then," said Nat, I looked away from Y/n, "Go have fun," Y/n smiled and said goodbye to George as I stood by the elevator waiting for her. I was still trying to process that I was taking her on a date. She smiled as she walked over to me.
"Lead the way," she said, hooking her arm through mine.
