a/n: i went back and made some small editorial changes to this since it was the first chapter and i've already written a lot more, so i want it to flow.
I was snapped back into reality as the school bell rang. I frantically began packing up my stuff. Mr. Turner's 12th grade English class has got to be the worst one in the whole school. That or I suck at analyzing books.
"C'mon Dakota, we have places to be." I hear my best friend, Camila, say as I finish zipping up my bag and stand to my feet.
"Let's go." I say as we exit the classroom. Since we're seniors, Camila and I get to leave after fifth period because our schedules are so small, so she usually brings me and takes me home. I don't have my license or a car, and I don't prefer my college drop-out brother pick me up. Plus it's way more fun to ride to school with a friend.
Louis dropped out of college with his friends so they could all pursue boxing. They're pretty good and they do it professionally, that's how they all met actually, but I hate watching it. It makes my skin crawl seeing them get hurt.
We walk down the long corridor and exit the building at the gym exit to begin walking to her car. Her old pick up truck doesn't have a great gas mileage and is really bumpy to ride in, but she loves it anyway.
We hop into the car and I immediately tie my dark brown hair into a messy bun in the back, my bangs falling out of the tie and dangling in my face. Camila puts the car into drive and starts backing out of the parking lot.
The drive is short but since I'm the DJ it's definitely enjoyable. Cam puts the car in park a little bit down from my driveway and that's when I look up from my phone to see the three cars of my brother's annoying friends parked in the street.
"Oh, fuck." I mutter. I love my brother and his friends, and they can be fun sometimes, but I do not want to deal with them right now. It's been a long week and I just want to go to sleep but I know that somehow they'll drag me into doing something with them.
"Why don't we go shopping? I've been dying to get my hands on this new top." Camila notices my discomfort and offers another solution. She already putting the car in drive before I answer.
"Please." I usually would never want to go shopping with Camila during any other circumstances, but she knows that I hate when my brother has his friends over for the weekend. Camila and I are very different, but we like to think that's what drew us together in the first place. We've been friends since middle school, and I've only really had her and my brother since. I moved to this town in 4th grade and she was my first and only friend. Camila, on the other hand, is practically famous in our little town. She knows basically everyone. She's just so kind-hearted to everyone she meets, she's hard not to like. I'm just grateful she hasn't replaced me as best friend after all this time.
My parents decided to go out of town this weekend, kind of like a wedding anniversary gift to themselves, so I knew that Louis would probably have his friends over, the date must've just slipped my mind. We make it to the shopping mall and I step out of the car, following Cam into a fashion boutique.
"Why don't you get something nice, Dakota?" She says while scanning the racks as I follow her down one of the isles.
I shake my head, "I don't even have anywhere to go in something nice, there's no point. I'll stick to my leggings and sweatshirt, thanks." It's been getting colder anyway, I would never be caught dead in a dress right now. Don't get me wrong, I like to dabble in fashion- Well, Cam likes to dabble in fashion and she picks out all my outfits whenever I'm not wearing sweats- but I do enjoy skirts sometimes.
"Oh come on, I'll bring you out to the club sometime. I'm sure you'd love it." She tries to convince me. She's been trying to convince me to go to this club with her ever since she got us fake ID's, but I just really don't want to. I prefer to use my fake ID on buying drinks to enjoy at home, alone.
