"Get your ass here right now, I'm cold." I say into the voicemail receiver and hang up.
It's Sunday before second semester starts up so Cam and I decided we should hang out and catch up. We've both been so busy doing god knows what that we haven't had a chance to see each other recently.
I redial her number and listen to all the ringing before the voicemail tone sounds. "Camila, you said you'd be here at 11, it's 12:15 and I'm cold so you better-"
The roar of her old truck coming down the street catches my attention and I hang up, shoving my phone into my back jean pocket. She slows to a stop in front of my house and I jump up into the truck.
"What took you so long? I've been waiting forever." I tell her as I get comfortable on the long truck seat.
"I know I'm sorry. I was on the phone and lost track of time." She says as she switches gears and turns around in my driveway. "How have you been? I missed you this past week."
"I know it's been crazy. I got a job, Cam. Isn't that so... weird?" I ask as I bundle up in the seat. The windows are stuck in their places half rolled down so it's always freezing in the winter and so hot in the summer.
"Uh, yeah! You don't have to clean up after sweaty men though, right? I could not, in good consciousness, let any employer get away with that." She teases and pulls out onto the main road. We planned to go and get lunch, but I'm not sure where.
"Of course not, you know I'd never." I tell her and wrap my cardigan tighter around myself. "I actually work as like a book keeper for the gym's financial records and stuff. It's really cool. You'll have to come see my office sometime." I boast proudly about my office.
"You have an office? How much are they paying you?" She asks the question I'd like to know myself.
I shrug, "I have no clue, haven't made it far enough to get the pay check yet but I'll keep you updated."
She attempts to turn the hot air vents up, but they just blast out colder air so she shuts it right off. We start turning off the main road now, pulling into a small subdivision with shops lined up.
"I was thinking we could eat at that little Korean cafe that just opened? It's owned by a Korean family and it's supposed to be super good." She suggests as we stop in a parking space.
We quickly run from the car to the little shop, trying to escape the cold. The inside of the small restaurant is super minimalistic and tidy. It has glass tables set up all around and plants hanging in the corners along the windows. The menu has one side written in Korean and one side in English, which is very helpful.
We go up to the counter and order our drinks. I get a tea with those popping balls inside and Cam just gets a hot tea with milk. They give us a number place card and we go and find a seat near the windows.
"So... tell me all about your secret little boyfriend." I tell her as we take off our coats and sit across from each other.
She grins and tosses her hair in her hands. "There's nothing to tell." She says with a small smile but a serious tone.
"What do you mean?" I ask her, confused as to why she isn't blabbering on and on about her new man like she usually does when she meets a guy.
"First off, he's not my boyfriend-" She starts but I interrupt her.
"Oh so we're upset with him?" I ask her. I really don't understand why she isn't excited about this.
"No Dakota, let me finish." She laughs at me, acting very calm about this whole situation. "He hasn't asked me to be his girlfriend, it's casual right now. And we aren't upset about it. We're happy with how it's going. But that's all I'm going to say."
