04: all alone

my grades had gotten so much better, and the clock was ticking.

the red x's on my calendar grew closer and closer to february 6th.

five days.

four days.

three days.

two days.

one day.

after what seemed like an eternity, the time had come. it was february 6th.

prom started at 7.

I had 5 hours to go. I was going to spend all of those hours getting ready with my best friend. there's no other way to do it.

jieun pov

wow. prom is today. kinda... crazy. I did so much planning. I really hope this works out.

there were only a few hours until prom, and I was on my way to sunni's house to help her get ready.

that also meant that I had to tell her at some point...

sunni pov

I heard a car pull into the driveway.

"SUNNIIIIIIII! JIEUN IS HERE!!" my sister screamed at the top of her lungs.

"COMING!" I shouted back.

I ran down the stairs as fast as I could to greet my best friend.

"heyyyyyyy!" I said.

"hey girl!!" said jieun.

she grabbed my hand and took me up the stairs back to my bathroom.

"are you ready for this?!" she said, clasping both of my hands.

"absolutely not. BUT WE'RE GONNA DO IT ANYWAYS!!" I said.

the next three hours were a bit like this:

one of us would do the other's hair, then we'd switch.

after doing that, we'd have a dance off to whatever kpop song came to mind.

we got so into the dances that we had to redo our hair. four. times.

we realized we were spending a lot of time on that, so we moved on to makeup.

jieun did her cute little routine. light eyeshadow, mascara, blush, a little highlighter here and there, and she was done. at least... I think that's what she did. I'm not good at makeup.

I did my basic makeup next. winged eyeliner, mascara, curl the lashes, boom. done.

as we reached the "one hour till prom" deadline, we put on our dresses and has my older sister take our picture (as any best friends would).

I grew more an more anxious as the clock ticked down.

"are you ready to have the time of your life?" jieun asked.

"hell yea. and i'm ready to do it with you." I said.

there was an awkward moment of silence, then I asked "what?"

"sunni, I'm so sorry I didn't tell you earlier, but I actually have a date to prom. I might not be able to do everything with you." she said.

my heart dropped.

"you have a date....?" I said, kind of upset, also kind of happy for her.

"yea... I FEEL SO BAD!! IM SO SORRY I DIDNT TELL YOU!!" she said.

"girl it's fine!! just make sure he treats you right ok?!" I said. "also, who are you going with?"

"ni-ki" she said, blushing.

"that guy from your dance studio that you like?!?!" I said, actually really excited for her now.

"mhm.." she said, really blushing this time.

"AHHH IM SO HAPPY FOR YOUUUU!!" I said.

"thank you! he asked me on my way into the studio one day. I was going to say something to you, but I didn't want to disrupt your studies." jieun said, shaking.

"hey, as long as you're happy, I'm happy." ok.. that might've been a lie, but I was still pretty happy for her.

she shot me her pretty little smile.

god I really hope this kid doesn't break her heart.

"GIRLS!!" my mom yelled suddenly.

"TIME TO GO!!"

"WE'LL BE DOWN IN A MINUTE!!" we screamed in unison. 

jieun was about to head down the stairs when I grabbed her hand.

"jieun. I hope you have the best night of your life ok? no matter how much or how little I see you tonight, I want you to enjoy it. ok?" I said.

"ok." she replied.

"and if that ni-ki kid ends up being a jerk.."

"he's not a jerk!!"

"I'm just saying, if he is, call me and I'll give him a solid punch to the face ok?"

"ok."

"promise me?"

"I promise."

we put on our masks and with that, we were off.

Jieun and I quickly met up with the rest of our friend group. everyone looked so stunning in their dresses, suits, and masks.

we were introduced to jay's date (shocking right?!) who was a total sweetheart. (maybe she could teach jay how to be nicer...)

we also say heeseung and his girlfriend, happy as can be. I think this might be their 1 year anniversary. just seeing them happy made me happy.

finally, Jieun introduced us to ni-ki before being dragged by him into the plaza.

"go gettem girl" I whispered to her as she ran off.

she winked in reply.

and then, just like that, jungwon, sunoo, and I were left alone.

we were the single pringles.

all alone
the one day it mattered most.
