Settling in

"Jace..."

I couldn't move. He walked over to stand next to Alec, clearly not sure whether to comfort me or keep his distance.

"Ar- are you alright? I heard about the attack..." He stuttered

"Yeh, and we heard you hearing about it..." Alec muttered. Jace blushed! He actually blushed! I laughed softly, I was feeling a bit better. Then I saw Simon and Izzy come round the corner. They both ran over to me and hugged me tight, I was grinning like mad, but I snapped out of it. 

"Look, as much as I missed you guys, I can't forget what happened at that council vote... That and I have to figure out who sent those demons to attack me so can we get on with it I don't plan on staying long..." they all looked down a bit and we headed over to the strategy table. I explained what happened to all of them and they were so worried

"Do you have any idea who would want you? Raum demons are usually sent to capture not kill, although to kill could be a possibility..." Izzy said thoughtfully

"I have no idea, I left the Shadowhunuters so it couldn't be Nephlim right?"

"I have an idea, but you're not gonna like it" Jace said next to me, I knew who he meant

"You mean my dear darling brother? Or my wonderfully loving father? Either one could want me, dead or alive, I killed them both" I said with such ease it almost scared me

"I didn't know you had a brother" A voice said from behind me. I turned and looked it was Tommy back from the infirmary. I wrapped my arms around his neck I was so thankful he was okay

"Oh thank god you're alright!!" I pulled back "what about the others?" I said straightening up

"The strangers said they'd be alright but that they had to call a brother...? any ideas what that means?" 

"Oh god, who for?"

"Rachel, she got stung or something should I be worried? Are brothers a bad thing?"

"In this case it means that there isn't anything else anyone here can do for her so they have to call in the experts, she's not gonna like them though, they look... different"

"Well don't worry she'll be fine and you've always got me i'm not going anywhere" he hugged me again. He seemed pretty calm given the whole situation. "Anyways, what's this about a brother?" we turned back to the table where everyone else was clearly watching us with curiosity 

"That's your question? you just heard her say she killed her brother and her father and your question is 'you have a brother?' i mean- what?" Simon said, baffled

"well i guess looking at this place there are memorials everywhere, a lot of people die, so if she killed them there must have been a good reason. Of course I'm curious but she'll tell me when she's ready" he said calmly 

"guys, can we not please? Let's just find demon guy, kill him, and get back on with our seperate lives" I said buntly, everyone was a little shocked at how i'd said it but they could see by my face I didn't care.

"Look, Clary, as the institute head I have a duty to care for all shadowhunters but not your mundane friends. You can stay here until we find the guy, but your friends have to go as soon as that Rachel girl is better." There was a finality in his voice that told me not to argue... but I did anyway.

"Aren't you also meant to care for mundanes exposed to the shadow world and make sure they are safe. The person trying to kill me knew where I would be, which mean she knows who my friends are, which means you can't throw them out as they'd be in danger..." now there was something no one could argue with

"fine they can stay" Alec sighed, I grinned at Tommy

"Looks like you're staying!"

"Wonderful!"

I was up in my old room, everything had been kept the same. My art supplies were still everywhere, pictures i'd drawn of several people were strewn about, clothes were falling out of the closet exactly how i'd left it before I left. I was only allowed to come back for a few things before I left, my banishment was different than others. I had been allowed to keep my marks, my stele, a few weapons. However, I was not allowed to stay in contact with the shadowhunters, I could only got to them if it was an emergency and I wasn't allowed to mix with other shadowhunters. It was horrible at first but then I met Tommy at college who introduced me to everyone else. 

The other day Tommy told me he had feelings for me and asked me on a date. I'd told the others about an ex that I couldn't quite get over and he told me he understood if I said no. I told him I'd think about it. I think that's why he was being clingy today. He must have figured that the ex would be from here, this whole world i kept from them. That ex of course being Jace.

There was knock at door as I was taking my boots off.

"Come in!" I called. The door opened, it was Jace. "Hey, what's up?" I said a little awkwardly

"Nothing, just checking in, I was hoping we could talk actually..."he said looking at the floor. It was rare that he was this shy...

"er- sure" I sat down on the foot of the bed and gestured for him to come and sit.

"Clary, you should know, I hated sending you away but I knew you'd be in danger if you stayed."

"And now look at me i'm back here because i'm in danger after I left so i'd be safe..."

"okay i'll admit it didn't really go to plan-"

"when do any of your plans actually go to plan?" I laughed. We both did, it was nice like old times, then I stopped. This was temporary, I would be leaving again soon, I can't get attached. "I won't be here long but whilst i'm here i'll do what I can to help with patroling and such" I said in a more serious tone. Jace took that as the conversation over. He nodded and walked over to the door. He paused and turned.

"One other thing, about that Tommy guy. Are you two... like are you-?"

"No, we are not together. He asked me out a few days ago and I haven't given him an answer, probably gonna say no though." 

"Oh why, it seems like he really likes you..."

"well I just can't seem to get over my ex" I say smirking, it takes him a second then he smiles. He leaves the room grinning. I shouldn't tease, but it was true...
