Clary POV:
In the kitchen the next morning, I was sat at a table with Izzy, whilst she caught me up on everything i'd missed over the last few years. She told me about Alec and Magnus' kid Max, how Simon proposed and a bunch of other stuff. Jace walked in, wearing a tank top and joggers. He sat himself down next to Izzy. He looked tired like he'd barely slept, but I barely had time to think about Jace because Alec and Magnus walked in, Alec holding a small child in his hands.
"Clary, we thought you should finally meet Max. Max this is Clary"
"Cwawy" Max repeated, I giggled but stood up taking Max from Alec's arms. Max had dark blue hair which matched his blue skin and blue eyes. He had small horns protruding from his forehead.
"He's beautiful guys!" I said to Alec and Magnus. Jace walked over and held his small hand "How old is he?"
"Almost two. He doesn't have a lot of control over his magic yet, I put out a small fire this morning" everyone laughed
"Uncwl Wace!!" Max said noticing Jace
"Hey buddy!" He said reaching for him. Max wrapped his arms around my neck
"NO!" He shouted "I want Cwawy, I wike her wed 'air" He made a scowling face at Jace, that was so cute I couldn't help but chuckle quietly
"You like her red hair? Yeah I get that buddy..." Jace said smirking, I felt myself blush slightly and smiled at Jace. Just then mom walked in with Luke next to her.
"Luke!!" He came over and hugged me, watching out for Max
"Hey kiddo!! I see you've met Max" He said ruffling Max's hair.
"Yep he is literally the cutest! Morning mom" I said as mom came over stroking my head tenderly. Max reached for his dad, and Magnus took him into his arms.
"Awww, how cute." said Rowan from the kitchen door "Max really loves you Clary, you must be good with kids!" she was smiling sweetly, sashaying over form the doorway
"Urm, yeah I guess" I said looking sideways to Izzy for help, she just shrugged.
"Look I was thinking... We got off on the wrong foot and I wanted to start over! So... how about it?" she said cheerily
"Yeah sure, I don't mind"
"Great! So how about a girly shopping day to heal the wounds..." she said almost over dramatic. I really hated this idea, but I didn't want to seem rude given she was trying to make amends. Before I could answer though, a voice came from the door
"Ooh, sorry can you make a rain-check? Clary promised to spend the day with me and Kat..." Benny was lent against the door frame.
"Well can't you guys make a rain-check, we're resolving our arguments?" she retaliated
"Sorry, but I didn't get dressed for nothing, we're going you can have her another day!" Kat said walking past Benny into the room. She grabbed my hand and made her way to the door.
"Hang on! You guys have all the time in the world with her, after this is all sorted she's going back to your life but when she leaves she won't ever be here again" I felt my face drop. The thought that i may never be here again. I won't see Izzy and Simon's wedding, I won't see Max grow up, I won't be able to raise my children as Shadowhunters, they will never know the people I do. I stood there for a moment in the middle of the room, blocking everyone out. I didn't want to be here anymore. I wanted everything back the way it was.
Someone grabbed hold of my arm and dragged me out of the room away from all the noise. Jace.
"Are you okay?" he said "I saw you in there. You were doing your exstitential crisis face" we laughed softly.
"I'm fine, I'm just struggling a little bit" I said trying to brush it off
"You know you don't have to go with either of them. Since you've got here you've been working non-stop to catch whoever did this to you."
"And we've gotten no closer to finding who did it, other than that mundane girl"
"Okay I have an idea but you have to trust me... Do you trust me?"
"Always."
-----------
30 minutes later me and Jace were outside an apartment building that was old and run down.
"Jace, what are we doing here?"
"This is where that girl, Vanessa Taylor, lives."
"What!? Jace what are we doing here?"
"Don't be mad, I was researching her and I found out where she lived"
"Fine, but no fighting. We have no back-up ready. If there's any danger we leave as soon as possible, got it?"
"Got it." he said with a smirk
We reached the apartment Vanessa supposedly lived in and knocked on the door. A few seconds later a woman in about her late 30's, early 40's answered the door.
"Yeah?"
"Hi, Ms Taylor?" Jace asked, hands behind his back being all polite like
"Yeah that's me..."
"Is your daughter Vanessa here?" I asked
"What trouble has she got 'erself into now? She's not been arrested again 'as she?"
"Erm no, we're her... friends, just wondering where she's at we haven't seen her in a few days"
"You're her friends? You don't sound to sure o'that. Besides I ain't seen her for almost 3 days, she ought to be home any day now though"
"You- you don't know where she is?"
"Nah she does this a lot don't she. Disappearing off for days on end. She always comes on home in the end though."
"Oh okay. Has- has she maybe gone to visit her dad?" I was taking a huge risk now.
"Doubt it"
"Why's that?" Jace intergected
"Wha- well she didn't tell ya? Her dad died years ago. Me and him never had a proper relationship but he loved Nessa more than anythin'."
"Oh. I'm so sorry. What was his name?"
"His name? Well being totally honest never knew his last name but he had a bit of an unusual first name. Nessa's dad was called Valentine."
That niggling thought in the back of my head had just become reality. Valentine. Vanessa's father was Valentine. And my father was Valentine. Valentine.
We were sisters.
