"See you in a few hours babe," Daveed called up to Emmy from downstairs before leaving their house.
Every morning Daveed went out and ran 4 miles, the only way he really knew to clear his head. This morning was no different with Daveed throwing on a pair of shorts and a loose tank top, giving the dogs a quick pat on the back, and tying his hair back as he walked out of the door.
He had a pretty set routine of running a mile to the beach, a mile on the beach, and completing the final two miles on the way back, however, this morning he decided to try a new location that Rafa recommended. Rafael didn't run, but he couldn't stop boasting about this "beautiful" place he found while hiking with his girlfriend Kim.
Being a new location and all, Daveed decided he would drive rather than run there. When he arrived at the site, he was blown away by the palm trees and grass laden hills that ascended over the perfectly blue Pacific Ocean. Rafa was correct, it was stunning, but Daveed would never give him the satisfaction.
Daveed parked his car and got out, setting his strava app to "begin run." He set off running on the first hill he saw, telling himself to make a mental note of his surroundings. On mile 3 he decided it would probably be a good time to turn around. He was currently running alongside a strip of hill that overlooked a rocky beach. Taking in his surroundings for the first time since the beginning of the run, Daveed suddenly realized he had no idea where he was.
Not wanting to break his stride, Daveed kept running, switching directions in hopes that he would end up where he began. It took very little time for Daveed to realize just how far he had ran along this hill. This little strip of land went for miles and he couldn't even remember how he got here. He was lost and there wasn't a single person in sight who could offer help.
"Shit," he mumbled under his breath.
He came to the decision of switching directions again but failed to look down before turning around. His right foot got tangled in a mass of rocks and loose tree branches. He had been still running during the turn and the rocks plus the movement from the running caused him to stumble along side of the mountainous hill. He tried his hardest to gain his footing but everything was happening so fast. The last thing he saw was the towering palm trees before darkness encompassed him.
It had been hours since Daveed left the house, a stark difference from the hour he usually took every morning. Emmy knew he was thinking of trying somewhere new, but it was unlike him to be out this long without updating her. She called his cell only to hear his cheerful voicemail.
"It's Daveed. Sorry I missed ya. Leave a message yeet!"
Emmy was confused and worry was creeping in. He never left her out of the loop like this and she couldn't remember the last time he missed her call.
She rang again. No answer.
Emmy was fully worried at this point. Daveed had been gone for over 4 hours.
She called Rafa, maybe he stopped by and just forgot to let her know. Rafa had no idea of his whereabouts, saying he actually hadn't talked to him since last night.
Tears were creeping in the corners of Emmy's eyes. Where was he? She had an idea to look on their shared life360 circle. Daveed's location revealed that he had been at the place Rafa mentioned since this morning and his phone was fully charged.
Nothing was adding up. It wasn't in his nature to ignore his loved ones even if he was in the middle of a run. Emmy's heart and breathing were racing, and she practically ran to get in the car to see what was going on.
Thankfully, life360 directed her on a quick 15 minute drive and she made it safely amidst the panic. She hopped out of the car with her mind set on the worst scenario possible, sobs escaping her mouth. There was maybe 2 to 3 people in the entire area as Emmy continued to follow the directions tracing her to his phone.
