Yet another plane. Another plane ride across countries squashed in between strangers. He lived on planes it seemed. Once he got off one, he was always getting on another.
The constant voyages got tiring, exhausting at times, and he tended to question just why he continued to do this. Days like today made those questions even more prevalent. The pros of doing the work he did blurred when he began to dwell on the fact that today would be the first time he would see his girlfriend in over a year.
Sitting on the plane, his mind floated with daydreams of the past months of his life. All he saw was empty Canadian territory, none of it holding any meaning to him as it was missing the one person he wanted. It had been so lonely, sometimes he longed for her so deeply he would channel all his brain waves into crafting an image of her. The world was bleak without her, and everyday spent alone it became more and more apparent that he couldn't live without her.
The shuffle of takeoff brought him back. Back to the smelly closed-in tin box that would bring him back home. Home. Emmy was his home. No matter where he went, no matter how far, no matter how long, one thing was always constant. She was his world, the one person he felt completely at home with. His home was a person and there was only a short 4 hours in between them now.

"Miss," was all she could hear along with some soft pats on her shoulder.
"Miss, we have landed"
Her eyes flew open at the comment. Landed. She was home. She could see the other passengers shuffling out of the plane and it all became much more clear. The long distance was over. She was home.
This last year had been hard. So damn hard. The months spent alone in Canada were treacherous, even for her, an extrovert who surrounded themselves by anyone and everyone they could. It didn't matter though, she could be surrounded by millions of people, but the absence of one created a perpetual state of loneliness.
Every morning in that Toronto apartment it felt as if she had to reaclimate to the fact that she was the only one there. For the entire year, her brain could never get used to the fact that Daveed wasn't there with her.
And they would FaceTime, of course, call, text, all of that, but it wasn't the same. Communicating through a screen was no match to being in each other's presence. Facetime calls did not lessen the gap between Toronto and Vancouver.
The knowledge of the gap increased the difficulty of being apart. It wasn't like they were 7,000 miles apart. They were 4 hours apart, in the same country, but on completely opposite sides. So close to each other but so far.
They had finally made it though. The longest year of her life was over, and as she stood up to leave the plane, she could feel the joy coursing through her veins. All the energy around her had shifted, she was no longer alone in a crowded plane, but with every step she was getting closer and closer to the one person that made the world feel just a little bit smaller.
Emmy walked through the last corridor from the plane to the airport. With one whiff she could smell the air. Los Angeles. Home. She scurried through the gates to look for signs pointing her to their agreed upon spot. Her and Daveed had been texting the for the whole place ride, besides the time she had taken a nap. Her fingers had been eager to spit out everything she wanted to say, every word compelling her excitement.
Emmy lightly pushed through all the people who were pushing their way as well. Millions of people gathered in LAX, so she wasn't alone in the rush to see loved ones. Within moments she got to a clear area, and all she had to do was cross some paths and she would be at baggage claim, their agreed upon spot.
