Lunar stayed in her room watching the world wake up as she looked out her window for a long time before she heard someone come into her room and walk over to her side. When she turned to acknowledge them, Scott held up his hand to stop her.
“X told us what he saw in your mind.” He informed her. “We’ll make sure you don’t see Logan again.”
“What if I want to so I can ruin his life?” Lunar asked casually.
“We don’t fight for revenge.”
Lunar looked at him. “What about you? He basically stole Jean from you and now he’s the one going after her. Don’t tell me I’m wrong when I say you would love to show him what happens if he messes with her.”
“That isn’t Jean anymore…” Scott looked down as he let her see the wounded side of his neck and side. “She would never do this to me.”
“What, exactly, did she do?” Lunar asked a bit hesitantly.
He turned back to the window. “Her powers… she well, she used them to attack me. It caused my skin to start turning to ash or dust, if it weren’t for Storm knocking her out I would be dead.”
“Do you really believe Logan, or any of us, could bring back the Jean we know?”
“I want to say yes… that we could.” Scott shook his head. “But I know we can’t, no one can, not even the Professor at this point. I just don’t know what to do anymore… I’m beginning to wonder if it were best if I still thought she was dead.”
Lunar wasn’t sure how to respond to that, she wasn’t exactly the comforting type, so instead she stood looking out the window as silence spread between them. Her mind drifted off to what had happened before she’d woken up, as much as Logan hated her, she knew it was for a good reason. After everything she had helped Stryker with she wouldn’t blame anyone for hating, and possibly trying to kill her, for that. Though she still hoped he would find Jean, and that Jean would turn him to ash… hopefully permanently. Scott left a few minutes later to get to his class and Lunar felt Xavier’s mind contacting her.
“What is it Professor?” Lunar asked.
“I want you to try using Cerebro again.”
“Are you sure that’s wise? After what happened last time… not to mention I’m still weak from the fight.” Lunar didn’t want to admit the last part but he would hear her thoughts anyway.
“I know you can handle this.”
“Why do you press this matter so much Xavier? If I didn’t know better I would think you planned on dying soon or something.”
It was a few minutes before the Professor replied to her thought. “Even mutants do not live forever. I am just taking precautions.”
“I’m on my way.”
Lunar made her way to where Professor Xavier was waiting for her outside of Cerebro. The pain had mostly faded away though she still limped most of the way down to the lower level and to the door with an x on it. Xavier gave her a sympathetic look before turning to the lock, which scanned his eye before welcoming him inside with Lunar following close behind.
“This time try to clear your mind before activating Cerebro.” Xavier advised her. “It will make the process of controlling this much power easier.”
“Why do you think I can do this?” Lunar asked as she walked forward and picked up the helmet. “Before I met you I could barely do anything with telepathy, how do you know this isn’t beyond my limit?”
“Because if it were, you already would have failed before this when you first tried. When I first started practicing your telepathy with you I saw potential to become stronger. All you needed was guidance and practice to get it right.”
“All that from a few seconds inside my head?” Lunar questioned.
Professor X shook his head with a good-natured look. “I think you’re stalling Lunar, clear your mind and try again.”
Lunar sighed and closed her eyes for a few seconds to calm her thoughts down until everything she’d been thinking about was in the back of her mind, the only thing now was her complete focus on what she was about to do. So, for a second time, she place the helmet on her head and was once again thrown into the world of millions of minds humans and mutants alike. Lunar once again felt their minds screaming at her as she tried to focus on blocking them out until she felt Xavier inside her mind.
“Don’t block them all out, you must learn to hear them all yet hear one. Concentrate on one you wish to listen to and push the others to the back of your mind.”
Lunar focused on his instructions and felt the human’s thoughts dull down a bit, though the minds of the mutants continued to swirl through her head in a confusion of thoughts. Then she heard one that sounded familiar and concentrated harder on that specific thought until she found the source on the giant map inside her mind, the mutant, Kurt Wagner to be more specific, was currently on the other side of the world on the outskirts of a small town to stay hidden. Of course finding him and locating him without interference only lasted a moment. Barely a minute later the other mental voices of mutants had come crashing back through her mind followed soon after by the humans’ making it feel like her mind was going to be torn apart. Suddenly everything stopped and Lunar opened her eyes to see the circular room where she was standing, leaned over against the machine in front of her, with her hands clenched into fists. She took off the helmet and turned to see Xavier’s proud expression looking back at her.
“That was a good job for a second try.” He praised her.
Lunar shook her head. “Professor, I don’t think I can keep everyone’s mind at bay… how do you do it?”
“I was like that the first time I tried Cerebro. After some time of practice I got used to it. When you use Cerebro you have to be confidant in your abilities, otherwise you will be more likely to fail.”
“You really think so?”
“I do.” Xavier replied before wheeling her chair back towards the exit. “I have a class soon so our little session is over for now, you are dismissed to do whatever pleases you.”
