He skipped through hallways filled with water while I trudged behind, angry and confused.
"I need to see Ivy! I need to see her body!" I yelled. He stopped dead in his tracks and turned to me, his tall figure washed in a solid red light. On and off. On and off.
"Body?" he asked surprised.
"Ivy's dead. Sinner and Arkham killed her!" I sobbed. The Joker approached me, squinting through the dark.
"It's true, I overheard the guards talking about it," the Riddler chipped in. I felt him place his hands on my shoulders, "I'll take her."
The Joker glared at him like an angry dog.
"Take your hands off," he growled. The Riddler removed himself and shuffled backwards through a puddle.
"Come with me, Doctor Quinzel," he said. I stared at the Joker but he didn't react.
"You lied to me," I spat. He looked confused but I continued. "Don't even look at me like that! You lied, you said we had to wait until you got moved to level 2 until we left. You said Arkham wouldn't be an issue, and he's killed Red! And you failed to mention that us leaving meant the entire asylum!"
The corridor echoed with my words then fell deadly silent. The water came down like rain upon us, red rain.
"You were too much of a risk."
"A risk?! I was helping you! I risked my job for you, my life, and you repay me by keeping me in the dark? Crane knew, he knew everything and he warned me I - I should have listened to him. I should have known...now look at me, look at what you've done to me!"
Tears were streaming down my cheeks but he couldn't tell because we were already soaked.
"I thought you wanted this," he mumbled.
"All I ever wanted was you. Us being together, free from here, was that not enough?"
The Joker opened his mouth to reply, but changed his mind.
"Why won't you say anything? I trusted you. I let you change me and-"
"No Harley, you let me help you."
He moved closed and wiped my cheeks
"Can't you see it, haven't you always seen it? You're supposed to be good at analysing."
"See what?"
"That I love you, Jesus Christ. Of course I do!"
I stared into his eyes searching for sincerity.
"How can I believe anything you say to me after this?"
The Joker sighed.
"Take her to Red, won't ya? I've got work to do."
"I wish I'd never met you," I said darkly. The Joker's face twitched but he said nothing - he simply walked away.
"Come on, Harley."
I tore my eyes away from his shrinking shadow and followed the Riddler. He seemed to know where he was going better than I.
The hallways were horribly silent, no one on sight. I expected prisoners to be running riot and security to be taking care of it.
But there was no one.
All the systens were down, meaning all security. Electronic doors, cameras...all powerless. By the time we reached reception the sprinklers had switched off and the backup generators for the lights had kicked in. The room was reduced to a dull yellow glow.
We made our way down the stairway to the mortuary. Finally, the Riddler spoke up.
"Did you get it?"
"Hm, what?"
"My riddle, about what belongs to you but is never used by you?"
"Oh, um, is it your name?"
The Riddler grinned.
"Clever girl."
I entered the morgue feeling sick. Her body lay on the cold metal table in the centre of the room, a spotlight highlighting her beautiful features. I stroked her hair lightly.
"Oh Red, I'm so sorry. I let them do this to you, I let you down," I cried. I lay my head on her chest and sobbed. But as I did, I felt myself moving so slightly. I felt her chest moving.
"Wait-"
I pressed two fingers to her neck to which they met a strong pulse. Her breathing seemed to increase and her eyelids fluttered open.
"Red! You're alive! You-"
But she wasn't looking at me, she was looking past me.
"Harley, look out!"
I felt a searing pain in my back and I screamed. A figure emerged out of the darkness in front of me and another joined her, blood dripping from the knife in his hand.
My blood.
Sinner and Arkham.
