Despite the disagreement a year ago, life was seemingly normal again. Again? Had it ever once been normal?
Tony, despite his strong feelings towards Bucky, had allowed him to stay in the compound. He didn't have much choice when Cassie was constantly nagging him about it until the day he finally caved and let him stay.
"What do you feel like?" Bucky's voice sounded.
"Gigil." Cassie responded happily, ignoring Bucky's confused face.
"Gigil?" He asked curiously as he leaned back in his seat.
"It's the overwhelming feeling you get when you see something cute." She explained as she poked his cheek.
"I'm taking that dictionary away from you, but thanks for the compliment."
All Cassie did was offer him a smile before quickly grabbing the dictionary she had placed on the table next to the sofa. She pulled it to her chest and wrapped her arms around it with a frown.
"Never."
"You've had too much to drink, have some water." Bucky said, ignoring Cassie's failed attempts to keep the dictionary held tightly as he pulled it away and placed it back down on the table.
"You're mean."
"And responsible. It's usually the other way around, Rogers."
"Yes it is, James."
She watched as he put a little distance between the two of them, obviously trying to hide the smirk on his face. She smiled to herself, knowing the name would always have an effect on him. It seemed it would only ever affect him if said by her, a fact she loved to indulge.
He turned back to her and stood up, grabbing her hand and helping her stand. He silently led her through the empty living room they had once been in to their bedroom where he sat her down gently on the bed. He stood over her with his hands on her face and made her look at him. Hesitantly, he leaned in closer to plant a kiss on the tip of her nose before pulling away.
"Sleep." He whispered, and then walked around to his side of the bed. She watched on quietly as he removed his shirt and laid on his back on the mattress.
"Oh don't do that to me." Cassie mumbled with a glance at his torso.
"Lay down, Cassie." He spoke with a small laugh, grabbing her hand to pull her down.
The pair lay there silently, Cassie looking up at the ceiling and Bucky staring at her, smiling. He had found where he belonged, a place he had been searching for endlessly. And she was the key to his home;
she was his insomniac.
and he was finally happy.
but how long does happiness last?
