The world blurs past me. Used-to-be white, now sun bleached walls mix with the dirty pale blue sky from the unwashed windows of the old conference room. My chair squeaks loudly as I lightly spin around and around. Waiting oh so patiently for the meeting to start, that was scheduled for 9 o’clock. With only me in the stale room I pull my phone out of my pocket checking the time, 9:30. Slowing my chair to a stop I looked to my open laptop and notebook. My preparied songs ready and waiting. I wish CEO Mae was here, she would be here on time, and keep me company.
Eventually the door slams open, it’s hinges squil in protest. “Yes! Yes! I told you I’ll be there soon. I gotta deal with something first,” my manager looks at me with a slight snear. “Yeah. It won’t take long,” his disinterest in his own job as my manager never ceases to amaze me. “Ok. I got it,” he hangs up his phone and falls into a chair at the head of the table. He blows air out of his mouth “Where is that useless producer?”
“He-” I attempt to respond
A tall slender and shaggy haired man pushes the door open while typing on his laptop and carrying a stack of notebooks under his arms. He takes the seat next to me never looking up.
“Great! Now we can finally begin” my manager sighs out like he was the one waiting for 30 minutes. “We need a concept. I was thinking about a school girl concept. Something ditzy and cute. You would need a simple song. Hmm. Maybe a girl crush?” He scrolls through his phone very disinterested as he lists off some half baked ideas. “Either of you got anything like that?”
An awkward pause fills the room. His idea is the same as his debut idea but just like then I won’t accept it. “No. but I do have this song I have been working on.” I wake my computer up with a tap to the space bar and rotate it to face him. “It’s got some sick beats and it describes how girls and women are expected to foll-”
“Yeah, Yeah that sounds great.” He waved his hand at me dismisivly. Only sparing a glance at the screen “Tim? What do you got? Anything good.”
“Yes. I have a crush song,” a man of few words that's all he says.
My manager waits a nano second before he huffs “So play it.”
A bubblegum pop esque song plays from the computer speakers. It’s a fun song but holds no emotion behind it. It’s overly bright and sweet like someone drenched it in honey, coated it in sugar, and every candy piece they could find.
My Manager nodded his head “Ok. Haneul’s next comeback will be a bubbly single. We need real sales. Hopefully this will cover its own costs and make up for the debut that barely broke even.”
“Sir, I don’t think that would work. My debt style was the furthest away from cutesy. That would confuse current fans.”
“Current fans? You only appeared on Mnet once and haven’t been asked to appear on anything else. Your MV views are so low I don’t know how we even make money off it.” He begins scrolling through his phone “A cute song will get you attention. Actually get you fans.”
