Ben's POV
The next few weeks were the same. We'd be practicing right after the debate team and Lily and the other one would bicker. Then at the end my friends would come to take me elsewhere. The qualifiers for both teams were next week, the third week of October. We had to come in the top 20 out of 48 teams. Those odds were not in out favor. We were practicing like crazy to be fully prepared. The qualifiers were about a 4 hour drive away, so our school being the fancy school it was, is getting a bus and hotel rooms. Thanks private schools.
"Dude, where are you going?" Micheal asked me
"He's a busy nerd." Conner said
"I have qualifiers coming up, I have to practice." I explained for the millionth time.
"Okay, pussy." Micheal said
"Guys stop acting like a dick, if Ben wants to be a little girl about it we have to respect his wishes." Nathan said. How that sexist jerk got girls was insane to me. He always had a new one beside him.
"Who's the new chick?" Micheal asked changing the subject staring at the brown haired girl beside him fixing her makeup.
"Oh right, this is Candace." Nathan said
"It's Cadance, actually." She said looking up for the first time. "Hi, cuties. And nerd."
"Nice to meet you too." I said under my breath
"Are you coming to the game?" Conner asked me. They were all football jocks, I was their homework machine.
"Nah, I got mathlete practice." I said
"What about next week?" Nathan asked
"I'm out of town for qualifiers. Do you guys even listen?" I asked them regretting it
"Don't worry, I'll be there supporting you every step of the way!" Cadence said hugging Nathans arm
"Yeah, I doubt that. By next week he'll have met someone else." I whispered to Conner. After that horrid conversation, I headed back to class. I now have class, drama class. I walked in the auditorium and we were to put on a play. I hated theater, every bit of it.
"Okay class, I know that most of you dislike theater but this year is different. You're seniors." Mr. Nottan said as the class mumbled and groaned."Ungrateful jerks." He whispered so only the people closest to him could hear.
"Now, I know that most of you like competitions right?" He asked as some people said yes "Well there will be two teams. One team will be Romeo and Juliet. The other will be our rendition of high school musical." He announced.
"Romeo and Juliet will modified to be more relevant to keep you interested. I will be holding auditions in 5 minutes. Hand out the scripts please." He said"Why are both love stories?" A girl from debate club asked
"Because they're fun." Mr. Nottan replied
"Do they include their typical kiss scene?" The girl asked annoyed
"Listen, Aubrey, I know you got the PTA to agree that the kiss scene should be removed from last years play, the princess and the frog. This year were sticking to the script I'm giving you." He said as she slouched in her chair. I remember that she hated the representation in the movies of romantic relationships, she made a good point though, I agreed with it.
"Why do we have to kiss at all? That's how mono gets around." She muttered so only the people
"Hi, Ben." Seana said sitting down in the chair beside me. She was in mathletes with me.
"Hey Seana." I said handing her a script
"What do you think you're gonna audition for?" I asked"Probably Juliet. You should be ROMEO!" She squealed
"Wouldn't that mean we'd have to kiss?" I asked her. She gave me a confused face and got up to go practice but not before squeezing my cheeks and giving me a wink. Sometimes that girl was confusing as hell. I looked at the script options, I thought about it and though Romeo and Juliet seemed more typical, I went with high school musical, maybe I won't have to sing and I'll get one of the back ground people. One by one children were called on stage to audition. Some people did well, others didn't. Some people could sing, others couldn't. Some people tried, others obviously didn't. Some people got asked to do something else.
"Ben Mckinnon. Onstage now." Mr. Notten announced. I climbed up with a script.
"What play and what character?" He asked not looking up
"Um, high school musical. And a character that doesn't sing or dance. Uh, please." I added
"Um, okay. We might be able to find a part for you... The coach!" He announced
"Okay, great. Nothing more I have to do?" I asked happy I wouldn't have to sing
"Could you at least try to sing?" He asked as I scrunched my nose as walked back to the middle of the stage.
"I guess." I said
"From the top of get your head in the game, please." as he pressed play on his computer. I guess I might've tried my best but I was given a strange look by Mr. Notten. I got weird stares as I went back to my seat and was immediately hugged by Seana.
"Good job!" She squealed let go of me.
"Thanks. You aren't upset I didn't audition for Romeo and Juliet?" I asked her
"Of course I'm upset, but who can be mad at someone this cute?" She said patting my cheek
"Uh, thanks?" I said uncomfortably. We then sat in silence watching others audition.
"Seana Kathe?" Mr. Notten said
"Yes! I'm here I mean." She said getting up and happily walking towards the stage. "I'm here to audition for the part of Juliet." She said excitedly and refusing to read off a script.
"Okay, perfect. You may begin whenever you are ready." Mr. Notten said getting settled in to watch the performance. Seana got the leading role in last years the princess and the frog so there was nothing stopping her from getting the part of Juliet this year since there weren't many competitors.
