Aubreys POV
It started with humming the tune, then I started singing it. I couldn't help it, it's too catchy. I then sat down and slumped into my seat. More people came onto the bus and looked at me out of the corner of their eye.
"Congrats." Someone said interrupting my plan to fall into a giant void.
"Sorry?" I asked confused sitting up.
"On getting Gabriella. I saw you at rehearsals and you sounded really good." The girl said
"Really? I mean thank you." I said now not doubting my abilities. It's one thing to be humble and another to reflect your complements to seem humble. One thing I've learned is it boosts your self confidence to thank people for complements rather than throwing them back.
"Oh there she goes again, the bitch who wants others to be jealous." Lillian said walking onto the bus with a frozen lemonade.
"What? I'm just being nice and accepting the complements." I defended myself
"Wow, selfish much? Why can't you be polite and humble for once. Where no one has to stroke your ego." She yelled at me
"Excuse me? I don't need people to stroke my ego in order to know I'm good at singing. I beat you for the lead." I said, immediately being taken back by what I said. "Lil, I'm so sorry. It just slipped out."
"Yeah, sure. Like I said, be more humble." She said clearly upset
"If I reflect the complement then I would in return get more complements. Then you will be mad at me for fishing for complements." I defended myself
"You're the worst."She said storming off
"Thank you!" I called after her and she gave me the stink eye.
"That was great." Lily said walking over to me, happy that I got mad at Lillian.
"Oh, you." I said sarcastically
"Yeah yeah, you hate me and all. But you hate her more! This is wonderful." Lily exclaimed
"How is anything wonderful." I said sadly thinking of something I've kept a secret that might help me through this situation
"What's wrong?" She asked taking a seat beside me. Now normally I would say what, but today I did the stereotypical thing.
"Nothing." I lied. At this point anyone can know it's a lie.
"Yeah right." She said rolling her eyes
"I'm not going to tell you." I said in a tone that would make others back down. I gave her the stink eye and clenched my fists. She looked at my hands while my fists were tightly clenched around the edge of my sleeves.
"Yeah right." She snorted "I'm not like the others. I'm not scared of you. I know it's just to cover up your emotions. So tell me, what's wrong?" She said as I gave her a disapproving look
"Why do you care?" I asked
"We are now friends. You lose a Lillian, you get a Lily. Plus now we have something in common, hating Lillian." She said
"I don't hate Lillian." I said
"Yeah." She said nudging me
"No" I said
"Mhm." She said nodding
"Well," I said thinking about all the things she's said to me
"Yeah" She interrupted
"I guess." I caved in
"See!" She exclaimed clapping
"Okay, fine. I hate her a little. But it's not my fault." I said
