Prologue

The rain was pouring heavily around Eli- not short for Elisa, not short for Elizabeth, just Eli- with no sign to cease. It was already the sweaty start of July she realized, and the sweat-sticky girl let out a long sigh. She had a lecture in ten minutes, but the downpour was as hard as ever.

Five minutes – darn it.

There were only two ways that led to the engineering building she was headed to. One that went around the building complex, and a road that went straight through. Unfortunately it was also-under the bridge, alongside a stream that was currently overflowing with the massive downpour.

Should she have been more cautious and went around? Perhaps.

But of course she was late and could not afford another tardy from her professor, her grades were already suffering as it is. There was no way she would get carried by the current anyways. That only happened in the news- right? Being a werewolf also had its perks.

And with that thought, she trekked her way down the dirt road alongside the brimming creek. Later, she would give herself credit that she at least tried to be fast. But in the end, it still probably wouldn't have mattered because Mother Luna always got her way.

She was oblivious to the water lapping at her feet, consumed by the worries of her life. Mostly of being mateless in the ripe age of 22, but also the strange symptoms she seemed to have shown lately. The restlessness of her wolf, frequent fevers that she shouldn't have, considering her species, and all of the stress rolling into a giant pile of worries in the back of her head.

In fact, she felt very dizzy now, maybe it was because of the rain pelting down her head? She was almost there, but her vision blurred, and a spark of panic set low in her stomach. The eco-bag she was carrying on her shoulder suddenly became a lot more heavier than it should be, and she could physically feel her body warm up.

What in the world-?

And in that moment she swayed, slipped on the mud she tried so hard to avoid stepping on- and tipped over the bank.

She felt herself falling but even then, she thought getting herself out would be easy even if she did fall in the churning waters of the creek. When she hit water, she knew that was not the case.

Desperately coming up for air, she dog-paddled to keep herself afloat, but her bag- and her good for nothing 7th edition of Fundamental of Physics was pulling her down. She should have dumped the books and shrugged the whole thing off her shoulders, but the sad truth was even in her most desperate situation, she was thinking of the goddamn price of it.

The rain didn't help either, even when she got to the surface she couldn't catch a breath. Nausea hit hard while she flapped around for survival, and in utter disbelief she found herself unable to think straight at all. The creek shouldn't even be this deep, but there was no time to dwell on it.

Dizzy, cold, and completely disoriented, she took a large gulp of air when the black waters closed over her head. And she went deeper and deeper, unknown by anyone as the rain ceased and miraculously, the sun came out above ground.
