Chapter 7
Both constituents of the conversation were too engrossed with each other to notice the shadow dawning upon them.
She was quickly salvaged from Lord Alexander's deathly grip only to be reclaimed by another strong pair of arms-her eyes locked with ignited hazel eyes pinning down her struggling form.
Her mate's gaze lifted across to the shaken but unapologetic Alpha. The air crackled with energy and a palpable sense of aggressiveness. Eli broke in a cold sweat just from the sheer hostility rolling about in the peaceful Garden.
Guttural, threatening gnarls echoed and bounced off the soft humming of the fountain while the Prince dipped his head to trail down the slope of her neck, never once breaking his gaze from his adversary. She shivered at the intensity in which his nose pressed unto her mark and the heat seeping through the back of her light gown.
Entranced with the sudden turn of events, she leaned into his protective cage to bask in the warmth of his arms. The Prince was in a more aristocratic attire than he usually was and she feared to ruin the sharply pressed white crisp shirt. But as she indicated to seek independence, the Prince only held her from detaching herself.
When it seemed that she was in the exact same shape as the morning -save a few tendrils of chocolate brown hair-the Prince twisted his tense upper body with her still pinned to his chest to reciprocate the Alpha of Warfare.
Surprisingly, it was Lord Alexander who spoke first.
"Prince Trenton, to what do we owe this pleasure?" The Lord drawled out, a mocking glint in his eyes.
Does he want to die? His aloofness was a match just waiting to be caught on fire.
The Prince further tensed at the opponent's impudence but shortly after, his grip miraculously eased around her as he straightened his poise.
"I must not have made myself clear to you- to the both of you, on our wedding day."
Eli flinched inwardly, unexpectedly being mentioned.
"When I marked her as mine, the relationship and the sentiments you shared with her steadily fades as time goes by, Alpha Alexander." His harsh breath caressed her ears while soft wisps of obsidian hair tickled the side of her cheek as he shifted to stand more in front of her. The blonde Alpha grew frigid at his change of stance.
"Seeing as I stepped in on a rather intimate position with the future Queen, you must not be accustomed to the term 'ex', perhaps?" The Prince leered.
"We were just holding hands, your Majesty. You mustn't lose control over such a simple act." Alpha Alexander was bristling wildly but went as far as taunting the Crown.
Eli could only watch the exchange between the two Alphas. The Prince she knew would blow up on Lord Alexander for implying his strength, but ever since the evening supper, she doubt he would put those who questioned his eligibility in their place. She was not disappointed when he stayed silent as the Alpha raved on.
"After all, how would you rule a kingdom when you can't even reign in your jealousy? Or is this just a personal vendetta against me being the first man to your mate?"
She gasped at the unexpected disclosure of her past. Was he somehow more than a friend to Lady Elise in the past?
"Everyone in this palace knows your friendship with the Princess is exceptional- but your feelings are unfortunately not reciprocated." Prince Trenton derided.
Well, that certainly put things into perspective.
From everything she picked up, she could assume two sure facts. Alexander was her childhood friend, hence him saying that they were the 'longest acquaintance'. But at the same time, his feelings ran deeper than a friend should, which meant Lady Elise was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
