"a pity they let the old punishments die. there was a time detention would find you hanging by your thumbs in the dungeons. god, i miss the screaming. you'll be serving detention with hagrid tonight. He's got a little job to do inside the dark forest. a sorry lot this, hagrid. oh, good god, man, you're not still on about that bloody dragon, are you?" filch said
"norbert's gone. dumbledore sent him off to romania to live in a colony." hagrid explained
"well, that's good, isn't it? he'll be with his own kind." hermione asked
"yeah, but what if he don't like romania? what if the other dragons are mean to him? he's only a baby, after all." hagrid explained
"oh, for gods sake, pull yourself together, man. you're going into the forest, after all. got to have your wits about you." filch said, annoyed
"the forest? i thought that was a joke! we can't go in there. students aren't allowed. and there are....werewolves!" draco said, terrified, making me roll my eyes
"there's more than werewolves in those trees, lad. you can be sure of that." filch said before turning to go back to the castle "Nighty-night."
"right. let's go." hagrid said
we walked a little bit into the forest up till a tree where hagrid bent down and dipped his fingers in a silver puddle
"hagrid, what's that?" harry asked
"what we're here for. see that? that's unicorn's blood, that is. i found one dead a few weeks ago. now, this one's been injured bad by something. so, it's our job to find the poor beast. ron, hermione, you'll come with me."
"okay." ron said
"and harry and y/n, you'll go with malfoy.
"okay. then i get fang!" draco said and i rolled my eyes
"fine. just so you know, he's a bloody coward." hagrid replied
we started walking through the forest
"you wait till my father hears about this. this is servant's stuff." draco said
"if i didn't know better, draco, i'd say you were scared." i said, rolling my eyes
"scared, potter?!" he scoffed "did you hear that? come on, fang." him suddenly scared
"what is it, fang?" harry asked
up ahead we saw a cloaked figure crouching over a dead unicorn, drinking its blood from the wound. it raised its head and i felt my scar searing with a burning pain and i could tell he felt it too. draco screamed and ran away with fang, being the baby he is.
"HELP!!!!!" draco screamed as he ran away.
as the figure stood up, it began moving towards us. we held on to each other as we moved backwards. just then we heard hoof-beats and a centaur make his way towards us. i stood up and helped harry do the same
"harry and y/n potter, you must leave. you are known to many creatures here. the forest is not safe at this time. especially for you." firenze said
"but what was that thing you saved us from?" harry asked us
"a monstrous creature. it is a terrible crime to slay a unicorn. drinking the blood of a unicorn will keep you alive even if you are an inch from death. but at a terrible price. you have slain something so pure that the moment the blood touches your lips, you will have a half-life. a cursed life."
"but who would choose such a life?" he asked
"can you think of no one?"
"do you mean to say...that that thing that killed the unicorn...that was drinking its blood...that was voldemort?" i asked
"do you know what is hidden in the school at this very moment?" firenze asked
"the philosopher's stone." harry and i chorused
just then hagrid, hermione, ron and draco came up with fang and he had his crossbow raised but lowered it when he saw firenze.
"harry! y/n!" hermione called out
"hello there, firenze. i see you've met our young potters. you all right there, y/n and harry?" hagrid said as we nodded
"this is where i leave you. you're safe now. good luck." firenze said, going back into the forest
while walking back to the castle i pulled malfoy aside
"bloody coward" i said rolling my eyes
"i am not. and what did you expect if we went in the forest" he retorted
"for you to stay calm like everyone else. and if your dumb ass wouldn't have snitched, none of us would have to do that" i said giving a sarcastic smile before walking up ahead to my brother
*the next day in the common room*
"you mean you-know-who's out there, right now, in the forest?" hermione asked
"but he's weak. he's living off the unicorns. don't you see? we had it wrong! snape doesn't want the stone for himself; he wants the stone for voldemort. with the elixir of life, voldemort will be strong again. he'll... he'll come back." i said
"but, if he comes back, you don't think he'll try to... kill you, do you?" ron asked
"i think if he'd had the chance, he might've tried to kill us tonight." harry replied
"and to think i've been worrying about my potions final." ron gulped
"hang on a minute. we're forgetting one thing. who's the one wizard voldemort always feared? dumbledore. as long as dumbledore's around, you're safe. as long as Dumbledore's around, you can't be touched." hermione interrupted, giving us a reassuring smile.
