My real parents, were named Sayuki Omori and Yasuke Shizukata. Apparently, they had me before they were married, and were engaged when they died. I was staying at my uncles place, a scuffy man with a much too beautiful and out going wife. He had the news on, and the plane my parents were on showed up. The accident had several causes, all too complicated for little me to understand. But it wasn't watching the plane go down that scared me. It was the video they recovered that she took to show me.
They thought it was wonderful, my uncle, my aunt, the nurses. How lucky I was to be able to hear my mother say she loved me one last time. But I hated it. I hated that video, because my I didn't really know the person in that video. My father was passed out beside her... and when she said "I love you" it didn't mean anything to me. Those words were just muffled behind the suffocating fear in her eyes, and the video ended.
I only watched it once.
-"Yuri, did you make those cookies?" Reki asked as we watched Langa practice.
"No, my mom did."
"They were so good~"
"Yeah, my moms great at cooking. So is my brother."
"What about you?"
I shrugged, "I like to be more active outside."
"Is that so~" He mumbled, turning back to Langa as he crossed his arms, watching the poor boy fall for the third time.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"So your front foot always comes off..." Reki trailed off, sighing. He was really taking this training thing seriously, huh? Which really only made me more attracted to him...
"I'll do it one more time." Langa replied, pouting as he put his front foot on and moved the board back and forth, slowly, as if trying to silently tell us something.
Reki and I gave each other a look, "Does your foot really bother you that much?"
"I'm scared if it's not attached."
Reki and I tilted our heads to the side, "I'd be more scared if it was attached." He countered.
"No more duck tape." I insisted, "You almost died last time, remember?"
His pout only grew at that, and then his phone buzzed, and his mood just got worse when he looked at what the notification was. Reki stepped up to see and I jumped off the railing, jogging over as Langa explained he'd been refused from another job, even before the interview.
"How are you filling out your resume?" Reki asked, and him and I cringed at the sight of his writing. It looked like my writing back when I was in elementary, actually.
"I didn't do any writing or reading..."
"Want me to fill it out for you?"
"No way."
I blinked as Reki groaned in thought, "I guess we have no choice."
-
"PLEASE!"
I clicked my tongue and turned on my heel, whistling, as I moved to look around the store. I had no reason to go and meddle in their ridiculous begging to get Langa that same job as Reki. This place was already too vacant to need any more than two workers on shift. Besides-
I gaped as I turned the box of wheels to check the price, "Priceyyyy... Maybe 'joe' will give me some extra cash." I mocked, and then, I scowled in disgust, "As if. He's just as broke as me."
"I'll talk to the owner." The manager sighed, and the two gushed like children, grabbing on to his shirt and thanking him.
I crept quietly over to the counter where this tiny little dog thing was sleeping, and I carefully used a finger to gently pet it's head. It flinched slightly, and glanced up at me, before going back to sleep. I smiled in delight and Reki gasped.
"It didn't bite you?!"
"Hey- 'it' has a na-"
"How did you do that?!" Reki whisper yelled, coming up closer to me and shoving his face in mine.
I felt my cheeks flare, "Well, uh, I just... didn't make any noise, I guess?"
"Teach me your ways, Yuri-sama!"
I blinked, "Well, I-I don't really mind the sound of that-"
"Get outa' my store, you hooligans'!"
-After talking with Reki over text last night about teaching him how to ollie to help give him something new to do, so he doesn't feel stuck on one thing while he learns his balance, we planned to meet up at the skate park after school the next day. On the way there, finally changed out of my uniform, Reki matched my pace and I smirked over at him,
"Having a good day?" He asked.
"Yeah, why? Do I seem happy?"
He nodded, grinning, "Excited to teach Langa today or what?"
"He's pretty interesting and all but, I'm just glad I have more reason to skate now!"
"Didn't you have any skater friends before?"
"Some, sure, but not like this." We leaned in to a turn together, moving easily around the corner and then slowly straightening ourselves out again, I turned to glance at him, "Plus, I totally wanna show off!"
He laughed lightly, "Yeah, me too!"
When we skidded to a stop at the park, Langa was already there waiting, and I tripped when I stepped off. Reki grabbed on to my arm and I was able to steady myself, smiling lightly in thanks to him. I guess now, we were officially even - but I was still never going to give up pestering him to hang out with me.
"You guys came together?" Langa asked.
"We met up on the way here." I replied, "I got the bottles in my bag - and I brought Soda too!"
"No way! You're the best, Yuri!"
I let the butterflies in my stomach go off the rails as I skipped over to set out the bottles so Langa could practice doing an Ollie over them. It was Reki's suggestion, since he used to do the same thing, and I always forget to throw out my cups and bottles, so I decided to supply them.
Besides, the compliments from Reki are always appreciated~.
I stood and explained to him what his goal would be around the cups. Reki went over his footing, and then we moved to the side to let him get in his 'zone' as we opened our soda cans together. He went once and missed, so he set them up again, refusing my help when I went over to fix it for him. And then, he stumbled off his board again, complaining that his footing wasn't right.
The third time he went, I almost thought he'd get it.
"AH!" His arms flew up and the poor boy fell right on his ass, hard. Well, at least he had a tiny bit of extra cushioning.
I winced slightly and Reki whipped around, rolling slowly over to the groaning Langa, face flat in the dirt, "Are you okay?" He asked.
"To think an Ollie would be this hard..." He growled, holding his ass.
"You have Ollie's in snowboarding too, don't you?"
"Yeah, but your feet are attached and don't change positions. Even an amateur can do it... but on a skateboard it's totally different." Langa sighed, moving to finally look up at us, "How long did it take you, Reki?"
"Two months!" Reki grinned, winking as if he was a rock star, holding out two fingers, "But usually it takes about three months or so for the average skater."
"Is that so?" I muttered, and Reki and Langa turned to me,
"How long did it take you, Yuri?" Reki asked, and I rubbed the back of my neck.
"Not telling."
He tensed, "Eh? Why not? Who cares how long it took you?"
I pursed my lips.
"What?! How bad could it possibly be?"
"A... about six months..."
He leaned towards me, making me blush yet again, "I can't hear you if you talk so quiet you know."
"S-six months." I said again, pouting as Reki giggled, and then I immediately went to war over whether I should be pissed that he laughed or happy that he laughed because, well, I was ridiculously head over heels for this idiot.
"No biggy, no biggy!" He threw his arm around me and I gasped, coughed lightly at the force. I blinked, and took a moment to note how he smelt like fading cologne and somewhat like wood, and that weird smell that came with unpackaging your new grip tape.
He did mention in one of his blabbering sessions that he likes to make his own boards, though, so that's not surprising. But still. He was warm too...
"Do you have to be able to do this?" Langa asked, snapping me out of my thoughts and bringing Reki's attention from shaking me around and reassuring me back to him,
"The invention of the ollie changed skating drastically." Reki exclaimed, letting me go and running to grab his board, jumping up to the top of the slope and getting in position,
"It went from a board that just glided along..." He leaned forward, and I watched the wind move through his hair as he skated down and picked up speed onto the rough terrain of the old skate park, and when he jumped he made it look so horrifyingly easy,
"To a board that flies!"
Yup. It's official. I'm fucked.
