No POV
The night was late as the fisher sat out on the dock by his house, he lived alone, no family, being basically disowned. He hummed a small tune as he looked at the stars, he didn't live near town so the late festivities of the festival went unheard to him. He was more caught up in trying to draw the night sky in all its glory, he was always fond of the stars, he loved how the shimmered and shone in the sky, how they reflected off the water making it look as if the sky went on deep into the deep blue of the ocean he sat in front of. Doing art was frowned upon in his family, coming from a long line of blacksmiths it was no wonder why he was disowned for doing art and trying to sell it. Usually on nights like this he would be out there with a canvas and a lantern to light the area so he could see the colours but tonight he wanted to just slow down and draw for a little. The waves were calm and made him feel calm, with each small hit he caught a wif of the salty smelling air that he had gotten used to. He would often have dreams of what it was like to live in the water he often evenvyed, wishing he could just go in and forget all about his troubles.
He used to go down by the water all the time with his mother when he was younger, he was always warned of the dangers and to never go in too deep for fear of something pulling him in. Although as he got older he wondered what it would be like to just go for a swim in the deeper water, just to swim and feel free amongst the waves and the cool feeling of the water, to be weightless and feel like a feather. Tonight was the night, in his slightly drosy state he pulled of his shirt and slipped into the cold water. He didn't know what came over him but the rush of enegry that hit him when he made contact with the cold water was additcting. He resurfaced, tredding the water to keep his head and airway up out of the water he looked around, it felt amazing. He signed softly above the water as he looked around, swimming himself to shore, sitting on the near by rocky surface trying to warm himself up due to the cold tempture of the water.
He shook his head almost as if he were a dog, trying to get more water out of his hair as he sighed and looked up at the stars. "Hey" he heard someone say from somewhere around him. He looked around confused "hey" he heard again, his head snapped in the direction of the voice, hearing it coming from the water. "H-hello?" He asked out into the water. He didn't know what he was expecting but a face was not it. It was the face of someone around his age, skin tone darker colour and hair a deep brown? Possibly even black. He smiled up at the male on the land before popping his head out of the water, bright blue fins stuck out on the side of his head "hello!" He said energetically, sticking his hand out for the male on the land.
This caught him off guard, backing up panickally, "wait! No! I'm not gonna hurt you!" He said from the water "I'm Zak!" He said smiling and giggling softly. The other took a few breaths before he sat back down near the other "u-uh, I'm Darryl" he said softly. "Nice to meet you Barrel!" Zak said "n-no no barrel, Darryl" he corrected the ravenette who laughed softly. "Your funny! All humans are funny!" He said smiling, his tail just poking out of the water as he smiled. Showing off a big toothy grin as well as the fangs in his mouth. His crossed his arms on the rocks, scales covers the skin, fins on his arms as well. "So uh, what are you doing out here, Zak right?" Darryl asked confused. "Oh well I got bored at home and came to explore, usually I come with my friend Clay but he's caught up in trouble from his parents for going too close to a boat" the ravenette said. The brunette hummed softly, he wasn't gonna lie, the man or merman in the water was cute.
The male in front of him had blue eyes, bright blue like diamonds. Scales covered his face in some spots, more around where his fins were, his hair was wet but didn't stick all of his face, held up in some spots. The scales ranged in colours from bright blues to deep deep blues to soft pastel blues, so did the ones on his arms however the ones on his arms were a tad bit bigger and covered more surface area then ones on his face. Around his neck sat a peral necklace. His smile was straight besides the fangs that stuck out. Overall he found him rather cute. Zak felt the same way about the other, he liked his soft brown caramel looking hair, his freakes that covered his shoulders and face, his deep brown eyes. He smiled at him once again. The two stayed the night out on the ocean side just talking.

Zak had visited Darryl quite a lot, he came at least once a week, Clay had picked up on this and always questioned where he was going only to not be answered. Before Zak even realized he had started bringing small gifts to the human, then when he actually noticed he figured why not and would bring him slightly bigger things, like necklaces and rings from shipwrecks. Things that he found pretty that reminded him of the human. Darryl always told him that he didn't need to give him anything however Zak insisted that he get him things. Today Clay had followed Zak to see where he was going, seeing him by the shore holding a bag around his shoulders he waited for something, out walked Darryl, he smiled brightly "hey Zak!" He said with a smile as he sat down by him by the water, Zak gave him the things he had for him, they talked and talked before leaving once again. The next day Clay at approached him. Darryl came outside thinking it was Zak when in reality it was someone he didn't know.
"Oh uh, I don't think we've met before, I'-""I don't care, what do you want with Zak?" He was questioned "Zak? Oh well, uh, I don't know what I want from him, he's lovely to talk to and hang out with, don't get me wrong I love making those paintings of him and I always tell him he doesn't need to give me things-""paintings? Look let me cut to the chase, here where were from, when someone gives a person a lot of gifts it's tipically because they like them and are trying to court the other, I don't want Zak getting hurt alright" he said, he sounded very angry, Darryl nodded "y-yes sir! I promise I won't hurt him" he blurted out. The other hummed before leaving the human out on the rocks. The brunette sighed and walked back to his house, was the lovely merman trying to court him. Was he ready for this, yes, he was. He had been alone for so long and needed someone in his life. He wasn't going to use him as a distraction, he wanted to be his. He wasn't gonna mess this up.

It had been about a month since Clay's visit, every week the merman would visit the human. One night the man was out on the dock, painter easel set up, paints and brushes in hands. The late night breeze felt good against his skin. He hummed a small tune as he painted, a necklace from the merman he had an admiration for around his neck as he painted and hummed softly. The night sky was coming to, the stars weren't adds yet, a slight blue tint for where the water would be in the painting, he had started the peppering of the stars reflection in the water just not properly in the sky, more focusing on the moon and clouds that were covering the moon slightly, it was nights like this that he loved. He heard the waves hitting the dock softly, the water wasn't terribly active tonight which was good for him, made the dock more still. He heard the familiar sound of the merman coming up and splashing the dock with some water. He looked away from the canvas and smiled "hello Zak" he said softly, readjusting his glasses from slipping off his nose. "Hey Darryl! I came to ask you something" he said, hoping that the other wouldn't notice his slightly flushed face. The other hummed as if to say continue without words.
"I-i, uh, would you like to be my mate?" He some what mumbled, Darryl chuckled softly "I would love to Zak just, I can't exactly breathe under water like you" he said, looking to the male in the water. "Oh! Uh, I wasn't expecting you do say yes, but yeah! No, don't worry I can fix that!" He said with a smile. "Do you trust me?" Zak asked, "yes, just let me put my things away" Darryl said picking up all of his things before taking them into his house.

The two had been together for quite sometime, Darryl still would return to the land to paint when he felt like it, Zak would often times follow like a lost puppy. The living under water was an adjustment but he had gotten used to it, after all he was head over heels for the man he was living with.
