"Deklynnnnn!"
I know that loud echoing voice anywhere. It's my mother. My eyes slowly open with extreme resistance and wanting to remain closed. The light beams onto my face from the slight crack in the black out curtains. I sit up as my door opens wide and I see my mother standing in the doorway.
"You've got to get up or you'll be late for school!" She says excitedly.
"Yeah yeah yeah." I say rubbing my eyes to get rid of some of the drowsiness.
"Remember you have to be there on time you're showing a new student around." She tells me.
"Like I had a choice mom." I grumble.
"Well you'll get to meet someone new and maybe get out of that bad circle of people you call friends." She says with clear annoyance.
She walks out of my room leaving my door wide open. I just shake my head and get up to get ready. Black shirt black jeans and we're good to go. Don't forget your jacket. I grab my black zip up hoodie then walk out the room to look for my car keys.
"Mom have you seen my car key?" I ask her.
She points to the front door where the rest of the keys are.
"I moved them there. I found it at a thrift store I thought it was cute." She smiles.
It's a small wood panel that says Home Is Where Your Family Is with little metal hooks for keys.
"It looks nice mom." I reply.
I grab my keys and kiss my mom on the cheek.
"I'll see you after school." I hug her.
"Love you!" She yells as I'm halfway out of the door.
"Love you too!" I tell back while shutting the door.
The air is sharp and cold. It stings my throat when I inhale. I get into my car and turn the key. The engine grumbles loud enough to wake the neighbors, that is if we had any neighbors. My car is the only thing I have that I can say is one hundred percent mine. It's an old 67 Mustang Fastback completely restored by me and a little help from my old friend Michael. The entire car built up from the engine to the paint then to the interior. It looks brand new and shines perfectly in the sun with a black pearlescent paint coat.
I head to school but my drive isn't long. It's roughly a ten minute drive but the long road with nothing to see makes it feel extensive.
I pull into the parking lot and my friends are already swarming my car.
"Hey man." Jaxon says reaching out for a half way bro hug.
"Look who it is, about time you got here." Victoria says biting her lip in her usual flirting ways.
"Hey guys, I'd love to chat but unfortunately I've been assigned to show a new student around." I say trying to get out of the conversation.
My friends start asking more and more questions when I noticed a girl rummaging through her backpack hectically. She pulls out a bottle of pills and downs one with a big gulp of water I'm assuming. She looks panicked and distraught.
I continue to chat with my friends for just another minute as I watch her disappear into the front of the building.
"I'll see you guys later." I say and start to head to the office.
Once I make my way through the side entrance of the school I walk right up to the office turn open the door and see her.
She's absolutely beautiful.
I hear the secretary welcoming me into the office but I can't take my eyes off the girl in front of me. She turns around and locks eyes with me.
"Hi." I say to her.
"Hello." She replies.
I reach my hand out for her to shake and she reaches back for my hand hesitantly. That seems like trauma to me.
"I'm Deklyn. I guess I'm your official unofficial tour guide." I tell her.
"It's nice to meet you Deklyn." She says with a slight accent. I can't pin what kind it is.
"Where are you from? If I may ask." I questioned.
"Czechia. Formerly Czech Republic." She says rolling her tongue with each pronunciation.
"European, I like it. Come on I'll show you to your first class." I say opening the door and motioning for her to follow me. She does and stays by my side.
"Can I see your schedule?" I ask opening my hand.
She hands it to me and I wince seeing her first class. AP English with Mr. Metzgar.
"Oh you got put into advanced classes?" I questioned her.
"The secretary said they placed me based on my transcripts." She replies.
"Interesting. However I should warn you about Mr. Metzgar. He can be quite an ass." I say handing back her schedule.
She doesn't say anything. She's not very talkative. She seems to be locked up in a cell in her own head trying to find a way out.
Her lack of words might seem unsettling to most but it's refreshing to be near someone who doesn't talk all the time about senseless things.
"We're here, this is the room." I say pointing towards the door.
The doors already open and accepting students. There's only a few students inside and more than likely they're kiss asses.
"Mr. Metzgar. This is Katarina." I say to him as he looks up from the newspaper he was reading at his desk.
"Ah Ms. Zavesky I presume." He says taking off his reading glasses and standing up to greet her.
"Yes." She says bluntly. Clearly doesn't want to be here.
"Well it's nice to meet you. Have a seat class will begin in a few minutes." He says motioning towards the empty desks.
She walks to the back of the room and takes my seat. I couldn't help but chuckle. I take the seat next to her and she looks over at me confused. I point to the desk to show her the engraved name in the desk. She moves her arms and notices my name carved into the wood on the desk. She scoffs slightly and takes out a pen and begins roughly gouging at the wood.
A few moments pass and the bell rings. She wipes off the desk and smirks at me. I look over and she engraved her own name into the desk. I smile and shake my head.
Maybe this girl isn't so bad.
