"Linc?" I repeated, stunned. "Lincoln Moss? Is that really you?"

Suddenly I was struck with a flurry of memories. Memories of riding on the back of an ATV, under a canopy of green leaves that filtered the light of a relentless Georgia summer sun. I remembered the laughs, the way the humidity clung to me like a second skin...the hurt in Linc's eyes when I had to leave.

He was my first friend.

My first crush.

My first kiss.

What in God's name was he doing here?

I shook my head to clear out the overwhelming memories seeing him stirred up. "I don't understand. You're with the AOD?"

He ripped off a small black device at the base of his throat and tossed it across a room. "I'll explain later, I promise. But right now we gotta go."

His voice sounded normal now, and I realized why he was using the voice changer. It was so easy to recognize, his voice, like an old favorite song that you hadn't heard in years. It was familiar, comforting, and carried a pang of nostalgia.

I tried my best to ignore it.

"No, you need to explain. Right now."

"Damn it, Aud, quit bein' bull-headed."

"Oh no you don't." I took a step back, affronted. "You do not get to call me that. Not after what you just did."

He rolled his beautiful eyes, dismissive. "So I attacked your little vampire boyfriend? Big fuckin' whoop! He's a leech in human skin, a parasite. He, and everyone like him deserves so much worse."

I recoiled at the venom in his words, and took another step back. "Even me?"

His expression was puzzled, cautious.

"I'm the only living descendant of the very first vampire," I went on, minding my distance. "Does that mean I deserve horrible things, too?"

The shift to realization on his face was animated, very easy to read. As was the regret it quickly morphed into. "Lord no, Aud--Audrey, no." He amended quickly, wiping his face in frustration. "Just come with me. I can explain everything once we get off this godforsaken island."

I shook my head. "I can't leave."

"Like I said, you ain't got a choice."

"No, I mean I am physically unable to leave."

He cocked his head, confused at first. Then it started to click, and his expression turned murderous, disgusted. "You've been drinkin' vamp blood?"

"Not recently." I snapped, defensive. "But yes, I drank vampire blood. And because of that, I'm stuck here."

Linc eyed me for a moment before taking two quick strides toward me. We were less than a foot apart, though it felt like worlds with the way he was scrutinizing me with doubt and condemnation. I gazed up at him, wondering if he'd always been a whole foot taller than me, or if he'd grown since we last saw each other.

It had only been two years.

Finally, after an eternity of just staring, Linc leaned in and inhaled deeply. "Hmm, ya smell human enough." He said, sounding distracted. "When was the last time you tried to leave?"

"Three months ago."

"And when was the last time you, uh..?"

"Drank vampire blood?" I offered.

He nodded.

My cheeks heated as my orgy with the guys came to mind. As if I weren't sexually frustrated enough, that memory nearly made me blow a gasket. The taste of Nero's blood. The things Lucius said as he restrained and suspended my hands above my head. The way Aiden ate me out after Duke came inside me...

I groaned out loud, and turned my back to Linc. "Three months." My voice was hoarse, so I cleared my throat. "It's been three months since I've had any vampire blood."

"Alright then," Linc said from behind. "Let's go."

I tried to step away from him, but he took me by the hand.

"Now where do ya think you're goin', Queeny?" There was a chuckle in his voice as he hauled me to him.

I glanced over my shoulder just in time to see a tiny tornado form under his big feet. It grew as it climbed up his long legs, stretching wide enough to swallow him up as it crawled up his face.

Gasping, I turned back around to face Aiden. His chest was heaving, hand trembling as it was aimed in Linc's direction. He flicked out his fingers, like he was shooing Linc away, and the tornado whisked my old friend out via the staircase.

I wanted to tell Aiden thanks, maybe tease him a little about not doing that sooner. However, the look in his eye made me go mute. It was crazed, heated, and was raking over every inch of my body.

Feeling like a deer in a set of headlights, I froze. I opened my mouth to speak, but what came out wasn't what I had intended. Though that couldn't be helped. Because as I started to say his name, Aiden barreled into me, and tore viciously into my neck. I screamed so harshly that it burnt my throat, hurt my chest with the abrupt exhalation.

He covered my mouth to muffle the sound.

I beat on his shoulders with balled fists, kicked and bucked against him desperately trying to break his hold. Which was a mistake. The struggling only served to turn him on, and his erection began to dig painfully in the spot just above my pubic area.

"Aiden!" I shouted into his hand. "Aiden, stop!"

It was impossible to discern what I was saying, but the fear rang loud and clear...especially when Aiden started undoing his pants with his free hand.

I closed my eyes tight, inhaled deeply through my nose, and shouted both physically and mentally. "HELP!"

In less than a second, Aiden was ripped away from me. Weak from blood loss, my knees wobbled unsteady, the only thing holding me up being a surge of adrenaline.

Duke and the clinic nurse held Aiden back, using every ounce of their strength to do so. "He's gone mad with the Lust." Duke said, voice strained. "We need to take him to the cave, get him restrained until we can purge his body of the queen's blood."

"Release me, you traitorous bastards!" Aiden snarled, fighting against his captors. "I must have her. All of her. Blood, body, and soul."

Stay put. Duke's voice filled my head. Dr. Hadley is on her way to dress your wounds.

And with one final look of concern, Duke and the nurse bolted with Aiden in tow. After that, I collapsed.

I hadn't passed out, but I wasn't really conscious either.

My body was shaking so hard that my teeth were chattering audibly, rapidly. Dr. Hadley squatted down in front of me, brushing the blood-soaked hair off my face, but I couldn't make out what she was saying. Something about shock, I think. Lincoln came in at some point and hit his knees when his bright gray eyes landed on me.

"Aud," he sighed pitifully.

I lost consciousness just as he reached out for me.

Sorry for the short chapter, but this felt like a good place to stop. I know we're just getting to know Linc, but what do you guys think about him? Were you expecting him to be Audrey's first kiss? Let me know in the comments!
