An explosion of movement sent my head spinning. The dolls dogpiled Linc wordlessly, emotionlessly. Linc could barely be heard beneath the pile, grunting and cursing. I was in Nero's arms, heading for the exit at a blinding speed.

"No, Nero, wait!" I said, feeling panicky. "We can't leave him."

He stopped at the double-doors that led outside and tried to kick them open. They didn't budge.

"Don't worry, Queeny," Havoc boomed from the dancefloor. "You guys are stuck in here until Linc's battle is finished."

I'm getting our witch. Duke thought at me from the outside. Just hang on, Audrey. You'll be freed soon.

Nero tried to kick in the doors a few times more, but I shook my head, signaling him to stop. He looked helpless, furious, and his amethyst eyes shot up to glare in Havoc's direction. Setting me on my feet, Nero put me behind him while whispering, "Cover your ears."

I didn't hesitate.

Clenching my eyes tightly shut, I clamped both hands over my ears and waited for the muffled sound of Nero's whistle. But it never came. Seconds turned to minutes as I braced for the impact of Nero's ability, and when I finally opened my eyes again, it was to find Nero splayed out motionless on the floor.

"Nero!" I hit my knees, instinctively reaching to check his pulse.

"He's still alive." Havoc suddenly appeared looming above me, rugged face smug. "He's just...taking a little nap. Can't have that pesky whistle of his getting in the way of your revelation now, can I?"

"My revelation?" I repeated, confused and angry. "What revelation? What the hell have you done?"

"Me? Why, I've merely lifted the veil of deception everyone shrouded you in. Even Linc." He offered a hand to help me up, but I smacked it away, earning me a hearty chuckle from the wizard.

As I got to my feet, I saw the pile of golems move and tremble, the dolls faces still emotionless. Then in a blinding flash, the bodies went flying, soaring silently through the air before crashing with deafening force to the ground.

"Ya see, Linc came to me this evening, begged me to use my magic to suppress his dark side. He thought it would make him worthy of you." Havoc snorted, rolling his eyes. "And so, I did just as he asked--I suppressed his worst side, which in my humble opinion, is his human side."

A figure came into focus from the middle of the bodies as Havoc spoke, a figure with horns and wings and scales and a tail. It thrashed violently back and forth, slicing through the air audibly.

"What you see now is Linc in his true form, taking on the birthright bestowed upon him by his mother." Havoc went on, his voice fading as a glowing set of grey eyes locked with mine.

I gulped, taking an involuntary step back.

The eyes narrowed, the figure turning completely to face me. It nailed me to the spot, sending a wave of tremors to viciously consume my body. I knew what he was, and it wasn't a gargoyle, or a bat, or dragon. It was something much, much worse.

"Aud," Linc called out, but it didn't sound like him. His voice was warped, sounding like a deep, auto-tuned version. There was also pain behind his tone, a pain that jerked at my heart and brought a tear to my eye.

I turned my sights back to Havoc, barely able to look away from Linc's new form. "Fix him."

Havoc looked taken aback for a moment before throwing his head back with hoot of laughter. "Fix him? There's nothing to fix, Queeny. This is who he is."
