10- Seeds of doubt

"Chote, I know that you don't like children, but I hope Khushi managed to change your point of view on this too, because you'll become a mama soon, and Shyamji, you will become a father. I'm two months pregnant."

The reactions around the dining table were divided between the elders who were overjoyed and the youngsters who were shocked. Shyam was the first one to recover from the shock, and started with his overly sweet coated words

" Rani Sahiba, this is the best day of my life, you couldn't make me happier. Our life will be completed now with our little baby"

He couldn't completely mask the tinge of disappointment in his voice, and the youngsters, including Anjali, sensed it. But the latter brushed it away, thinking it's just the shock of the news. The others wanted to punch this slime hard, he wasn't even gonna change for his own blood?

They composed themselves for the sake of Anjali and started congratulating her, taking her into a group hug.

The five of them were thinking that revealing Shyam's truth will be even harder now, and they surely need to do it as fast as possible. They also have to be more careful, they couldn't risk another life because of him.

After the small family celebration with lots of hugs, smiles and sweets distributed to the whole neighbourhood, the elders retired to their rooms and Shyam declared he had to go to work, as he didn't plan to take a leave.

The younger batch settled in the living room and started chatting about their plans for the weekend. The newly wedded couples had to go to Gupta house for the last post wedding ritual on Friday, so they planned to go to the farmhouse with both families.

When talking about the arrangements, NK innocently asked if Shyam would come with them, as it will be on the weekend. He wanted to slowly drag the conversation towards his weird work schedule.

Anjali went a little far from the group and tried to call her husband to ask him, but he cut her calls, as he often did. She came back with a dejected look. The others were sad to see her like that, but they had to show her the real face of her cheating husband. NK decided to drag the matter further, as he was the only one she wouldn't suspect :

"Di, why isn't jeeja-ji answering your calls, is he so busy that he can't even manage 5mins to answer his wife's calls?! Even Nannav answers his phone during meetings when the family calls him"

Anjali frowned, true that she never really questioned him about that, she would get angry and he would pacify her, but he never really told her the reason why he was off the grid must of the time when he wasn't home. She made a mental note to ask him tonight, he can't continue doing that while she's pregnant, what if she needed something?her motherly instincts kicked in

"You're right NK, but he can't answer if he's in the court, na? how can he pause the hearing?"

She tried to cover for her husband.

"But Di, I think he said he doesn't have hearings this week"

It was Arnav's turn to add some fuel to the fire, and, on a queue Khushi decided to add the final words to bring doubts on Anjali's mind.

"You're so bad Arnav, jeeja-ji surely has something important going on, maybe he had to help someone"

Anjali smiled at that, yeah, her husband was a good hearted person, that was one of the qualities she loved the most about him. He always helps the poor, even taking non remunerated cases and donating to charity. At least, that's what she thought.
