'Dude, you're like beauty and brain, it's kind of intense when you think about it.' Anthony said as we walked out of Chem together. I hummed, not really having an answer to give. 'Are you going to come and watch the try outs? Jax get's all sooky when you don't turn up. Dude's like a big baby.' I stopped dead in the hall when Lincoln gripped my arm tightly. He dragged me away a few feet and I looked at him, Anthony looked a little confused but mostly he looked a little guarded like Lincoln was a threat.
'I'm trying out for the football team, will you come and watch me?' I swallowed, I hadn't watched Lincoln play football in so long, I remember how happy he used to get when he made a really good throw in little league.
'O... okay.' He let go of my arm and walked off and I headed back to Anthony.
'Wasn't that the new kid? The one with the scarred eyes.'
'His name is Lincoln. We were friends before he moved away.'
'Oh, do you know what happened to his eyes?'
'No, I know he doesn't want to talk about it though, so please don't push him on it, he has a bit of a temper.' Anthony looked at me surprised as we turned a corner.
'Dude, in all my years of knowing you which is like a long bloody time, I'm pretty sure this is the most you've ever talked in one go.'
I kept quiet and headed out to the bleachers while he went into the locker room to change. A lot of the seniors already had a position on the team, but they had spots to fill so they were letting the JV team try out and new guys to replace the JV squad. I sat towards the middle on the floor of the first row so my legs would dangle over the edge of the railing. There was a bit of a chill and the clouds seemed to be rolling in. The coach was already out there and the cheer squad was practicing on the other side of the field. Slowly the main players came out, and the JV squad came out, a smattering of new people were there near the coach and I spotted Lincoln, he had his jumper on but the hood back and I smiled, it was hidden behind my arms but I was happy he wasn't hiding his eyes. I understand what ever happened was probably traumatizing but I think it made him look more handsome than he already was. I wasn't too far from where they were standing so I could hear the coach yell out instructions, they were to run two laps as a warm up and then break out into drill squads. They all started on their run and the guys I sat with would wave to me when they passed, especially Jaxon.
A cold breeze blew and I shivered but continued to watch them. They finished their laps and started on the squad drills. Jaxon and Lincoln were in different groups so I would watch one for a moment and then the other, but I was more drawn to watching Lincoln. A loud clap of thunder rang out and I flinched and looked at the sky, it was so dark, I didn't want to get caught in the rain but I want to watch the rest of the tryouts. Coach let them break for water and Lincoln ran over, he pulled his jumper off and handed it to me.
'Find somewhere dry to sit and I'll take you home after the try outs.' I nodded as I took his jumper and pulled it on. I caught Jaxon and a few of the other guys looking over and Jaxon seemed pissed but what ever. 'Are you still scared of thunder storms?' Lincoln's voice pulled me back and I looked down at him with a nod as he squeezed my knee. His hands were larger than mine, actually he was much bigger than me, chest wider, muscles bigger, hands, arms, thighs, maybe because I don't play sport like he does...
I sat and watched the rest of the tryouts, Lincoln still had a great arm on him but he was also a fast runner, the team needed a running back and Jaxon already had the quarterback position. Coach said that the positions would be posted tomorrow morning on his office door. Everyone broke up and both Jaxon and Lincoln headed over, Jaxon was closer so he got here first.
