Nico POV

Do you know where you could find butterfly killers in America? Because Nico could really use that right now.

His stomach seemed to flutter throughout the whole school day, making him feel nauseous. It only started since he ran into Will…

Weird.

Right now, it was lunch and Nico hoped to see his sister since he hadn’t seen her all day. He silently walked into the very loud cafeteria and looked around for a place to sit. He didn’t plan on eating, but reading his American book, so he could catch up on English. He eventually gave up and just sat at an empty table in the shadowy corner of the cafeteria.

He slid his book out of his bag and began to read it, checking his phone for the translations to words he didn’t know yet.

“Now why did you decide to sit alone in a corner, di Angelo?” a voice said from above Nico. It was familiar and had a slight southern lilt to it. Nico immediately felt the butterflies in his stomach once again.

He looked up to see Will standing to his right holding a tray of food. Nico took a second to decipher his words. “Probably because I know nobody here, Solace,” Nico shot back.

“Well, you know me. And you can always sit with me and my friends. We always sit with my sister and her friends,” Will pointed to a slightly crowded table over to the right of them. It had a good majority of people, but not so much that it looked over-flowing.

“Alright.”

Will led him to his table and Nico awkwardly looked at them for about two seconds, then became very interested in the floor.

“Hey guys! This is Nico di Angelo he’s-”

“Nico!” said a voice as it came crashing toward him. It didn’t take long to realise that the little human-wrecking ball was Hazel. She jumped onto him and gave him a bear-hug.

“Ciao, (Hello,) Haze,” Nico said warmly, wrapping his arms around his sister.

“I thought you weren’t coming until next week?” Hazel asked, breaking away from the hug, and looking up at her older brother.

“Papa' wanted to surprise you. You are moving in today,” Nico told her.

Hazel’s gleam in her eyes got shinier, “Awesome! Oh, and Nico,” She said, sitting back down next to a burly asian looking boy, “you’re English is getting better.”

Nico loved his sister and almost forgot about all the people staring at him. Almost.

“Anyway, if you couldn’t tell, this is Hazel’s half-brother from Italy,” Will finished sitting down at his respective place, leaving an open space next to him, which Nico gratefully took.

“So Nico, what is it like back in Italy? What type of school did you go to?” a girl with calculating grey eyes and honey blonde hair asked him.

“Er, I do not know your names?” Nico said, though he phrased it like a question.

“Oh right,” Will said smacking his forehead, “That girl is Annabeth, that’s Piper, that’s Piper’s boyfriend Jason, that’s Jason’s sister Thalia, that’s Frank, that’s Leo, that’s Reyna, that’s Grover, that’s Rachel, that’s Calypso, that’s my sister Kayla, that’s Lou Ellen, and that’s Cecil. Is that everyone?”

“Yeah, but Percy said he had to use the bathroom. He’ll be here soon,” Annabeth answered.

“Who’s Percy?” Nico asked.

“That’s Annabeth’s boyfriend,” Jason, the tall blonde one said.

“So, back to the question: What was it like back in Italy?” Annabeth asked, her eyes inquisitive and demanding at the same time.

“It is much quieter than America. We do not have cars. But there are many boats,” Nico answered. He really was starting to feel the toll of homesickness. He missed the sunsets, the boats and bridges. He quickly extinguished his thoughts and brought himself back to reality.

“Nico said he would take me one day,” Will bragged teasingly.

Nico laughed. “I said maybe.”

“I interpreted it into a ‘yes’” Will smiled. Nico softly laughed again.

“Wow, Will you must be a magician. Nico never laughs,” Hazel jokes.

“Percy! Over here!” Leo called to a person standing across the cafeteria.

Nico turned around to see a boy maybe a year or two older than him walking towards their table. He had sea green eyes and windswept black hair.

“Hey guys!” He smiled, casually taking a seat next to Annabeth. “Who’s the new guy?”

“This is Hazel’s half-brother, Nico di Angelo,” Will answered.

“Wait, di Angelo as in Hades di Angelo?” Percy asked. Nico nodded. “Cool! My mom’s your guys’ cook!”

Nico felt his face flush. This was Perseus? He looked around the room self consciously. He thought people would treat him differently because of his status. He knows, it’s stupid, but he can’t help himself. A personal cook practically screamed, “Hey, I’m rich! And I’m probably better than you!” He didn’t want people to think of him like that!

He felt his heart race and his breath quicken. Were things really going to go down hill so fast? Or was he just over thinking this and things were actually fine?

Oh god. What if Will didn’t want to be friends anymore. What if Will thought Nico was an egotistical jerk? He could care less about the butterflies in his stomach! Will was actually was nice to him, what if he regretted it?

He felt his palms turn sweaty and the noise around him became muted. He felt his eyes fill with tears.

This is ridiculous. You’re being a baby! Get it together because right now you’re acting like a brat! He told himself. It didn’t help, if anything, his heart race quickened.

He suddenly stood up from the table making a mad dash for the bathroom. He didn’t let his tears drop until he left the cafeteria.

You’re a baby.

A brat.

Quit crying.

Nothing bad is actually happening to you.

You’re not actually hurt.

Just shut up.

I liked this chapter a lot, one of the reasons being is that this chapter has a lot to do with anxiety; which I have. It can be very serious, and really upsetting. I think this is important and I hope you enjoyed this chapter!
