Chapter 4 - [July 14th]

The speedometer hovered over eighty as I sped through the narrow streets. At the last minute, Rocky decided she wanted an ice coffee and donut for breakfast. To make matters worse, the drive-thru line wrapped around the building. We sat in line 8 minutes before we could even order.

"Hang on tight," I warned. Rocky's body tilted over from the force of the quick turn into the parking lot. She was still giggling excitedly when I parked the car.

Unlocking the doors, I hurried out the car then took Rocky out of the backseat. She started whining and pulling on my leg as soon as I put her down.

"C'mon Princess I'm running late."

She sat down on the dirty asphalt pouting. "Up!" she demanded. Putting her bright pink backpack on my back, I scooped her in my arms. With her in one arm and her coffee in my other hand, I sprinted towards the building. My briefcase was already in the office since I tried not to work at home when Rocky visited.

Workers awed and moved out the way, letting me reach the elevator quickly.

"Down Daddy," Rocky instructed, as we rode to the top floor. I let her get down and she ran corner to corner across the elevator.

The metal doors opened with a ding. Rocky skipped out happily, drawing attention from my co-workers. Everybody waved or said hi. She smiled to her fan club, occasionally acknowledging a greeting.

We finally made it to my corner office in the back. I liked the seclusion. Inside, Rocky kicked off her shoes and got comfortable on the long suede couch. I placed her coffee on the dark-stained oak table along with her backpack.

"What the?" She picked up her half empty drink, shaking the cup. "Daddy, you do this?"

"I had a sip." Or half. Even though I ordered a small, it was still too much caffeine for a four year old.

Rolling her eyes, Rocky wiped the straw off with her shirt. Her annoyed expression reminded me of Elle. They often acted exactly alike.

I settled behind my desk and turned on the computer monitor. Today's calendar was loose. Only one meeting scheduled which would hopefully pass quickly. I reviewed the status reports that were submitted yesterday. In the middle of reviewing the financial progress, Rocky came over and climbed in my lap.

"I have to work now but I'll hold you later."

"No," Rocky said, rubbing her eyes. She stayed up late last night playing the new Frozen game I downloaded to her iPad. "Tell me a Mommy story."

"I've told you all the Mommy stories. Go lay on the couch." Rocky shook her head and curled herself comfortably in my arms.

"Tell me story. Now, please." She looked up at me with her drowsy eyes and that's when I knew a story would put her out the quickest.

"Which one do you want to hear?"

"Sweets!"

"She's Sweets in all the stories." I laughed. "Okay. One day, I was sitting in a library watching skateboarding videos-"

"Like owwie?"

"Yes like the ollie I showed you before. I was watching videos in a little quiet room then I heard a very very soft knock on the door. It was so soft; I thought maybe the sound was in my head. But I looked up and the saw the most beautiful woman in the whole wide world-"

"Mommy!"

"Yup, it was your mommy. She stood at the door just watching me like this." Starring blankly ahead, I let my mouth drop open mimicking Elle's facial expression. Rocky laughed and pushed my chin to close my mouth. "She didn't say anything. I cleared my throat loudly and she finally started to speak. She said..."
