I was only 8 when the first incident happened. I had been playing hide and seek with my brother and when I found him in the bathroom, he screamed out in horror. He ran into the living room, faintly yelling that something was wrong with me and for my mother to come quickly.
She rushed in the room, her horrified expressions meeting your calm one as she gasped. My mom kneeled in front of me, gently caressing my left eye.
"Mama? What happened?"
She lifted me up and stood me on the bathroom counter top, letting me see my reflection. I had a hideous burn over my left eye that scalded my face.
"But I didn't do anything" I said starting to tear up
"I know hunny, it's not your fault"
She brought me out to the living room and I curled up in her chest, bawling my eyes out and not knowing what was going on. She softly hummed to me while playing with my hair before I was out cold, consumed by sleep.
Soon after that, the incidents started getting worse. Many bruises and cuts showed up on my skin, mostly minor but enough to look like they hurt when they had been opened or had first happened.
Since I was a child, no one had ever explained to me what was going on with my body. I found out by seeing a clip of a lady talking on a news channel one day.
"People's body's are becoming more and more damaged, people carving words into their skin to find their soulmate. It's making people reckless. No one knows why this only starting showing up this much recently, but we do know that it needs to end"
"Soul.. mate?"
When my mom got home from work that day, I asked her about it.
"Momma, momma!"
"Yes dear?"
"What's a soulmate"
My mother looked at me in horror.
"Who said that word to you?"
"The nice lady on the TV" I pointed to the TV as she looked over.
"Listen, she's lying. You don't have a soulmate and you never should"
"But, they can be like my best friend, can I meet them?"
She looked at me in disbelief before she got mad. She grabbed me by the wrist drug me to the door before throwing me out into a puddle, it was pouring rain.
"Momma?"
"Don't ever come back here, you are no longer my child"
She slammed the door in my face and I watched her close the curtains. I stood there for a moment, thinking she was joking. But she never came out to get me.
I walked for hours that night in the pouring rain, trying to find something to hide under. Eventually I found a bridge that went over a river and headed there. I sat down on the ground and curled up in a ball, trying to warm myself up until I fell asleep.
"Hey, kid"
I woke up to a flashlight being put in my face.
"What are you doing down here" I looked down but didn't answer
He sighed before grabbing me and throwing me over his shoulder. It was when he shoved me into the back seat of a police car that I realized he was a police man. He brought be inside the station and handed me a drink of something, I grabbed it and took a sip before spitting it out.
"Yuck"
"Sorry kid, we only have coffee"
I sighed and continued to drink the coffee, trying my best to ignore the foul taste in my mouth.
"So kid, what's your quirk?" the man asked me
"One second" I said, making my wings come out
A few seconds after, small wings sprouted from my back; they were silver and were glowing a bit due to the lighting in the room.
"Oh, I think I know exactly where you should go"
He then pulled the phone off of the box and made a few calls.
