Prologue

I fell towards the depths of the rippling ocean. I hit the harsh water and slowly started sinking. Five feet, eight feet, twelve feet, and continued descent. I looked below. There was nothing but black-blue darkness. Then I realized that I couldn't breathe. I opened my mouth desperately to gasp for air, but none came. Just a big mouthful of cold, salty water. I was unable to move. I couldn't swim up to the surface. It was as though something was tied very tightly around my arms and legs. I knew I couldn't live very long without any air. There was someone with me. My best friend. Her name is Pauline. A flash of white light appeared suddenly before us. It was breathtaking. Pauline dragged me into it, and a blinding light filled my vision. Then.... I woke up.

I was soaked in sweat and gasping in choked breaths. I had never had a dream like this one before. It was so vivid. It felt real. After a while, I calmed myself down and thought about the dream, replaying it over and over in my head. I kept thinking about the shining flash of light. What could it be? I asked myself until my heavy eyelids fluttered shut and I fell into a dreamless, deep slumber....
