I sat in the corner of the room while Mr. LaRusso toyed with a shelf on the other side of the area we were sharing. I was looking at my phone again, trying to think of something I could respond with. No matter how I started the message, I ended up deleting it and coming up short. My eyes popped up when the door to the dojo slide open, revealing Robby who was wearing a white and red long sleeve shirt and black shorts.
"Hey." He said to Danial.
"Hey." He responded almost instantaneously.
Robby bent down to the box sitting by Mr. LaRusso's feet, pulling out a little hand drum. He moved it slowly side to side, seeing with balls smack the drum with each rotation. I quietly watched the interaction from my corner, almost sure that neither of them knew I was there, either that or they didn't care.
"Careful, that drum saved my life." Mr. LaRusso pointed to the drum in Robby's hand.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to touch it." He apologized. I'm pretty sure you did mean to touch it or you wouldn't have picked it up, I said inside my head, not wanting to have to interact with them.
"No, it's just a toy." Danial smiled towards the boy in front of him. "Then again, not everything at Miyagi-Do is exactly what it seems." He added. Robby smiled to the older man before his gaze shifted to something behind him. He walked towards a shelf with a framed medal on it.
I looked back at my phone. "That's the medal of honor." I heard Mr. LaRusso say to Robby. "Highest medal awarded by the U.S. military."
"I didn't know Mr. Miyagi was a war hero."
"Yes he was." Danial's voice almost seemed sad as he said the last part.
"I guess it wasn't all bonsai's and kata." Robby told him. I looked up from my phone. "What are these?" Robby asked, pointing towards the two banners hanging from the wall.
Deciding that it was time to join civilization again, I got up from my corner and walked over to stand beside Robby. "Oh hey." He jumped at bit when he noticed me.
"Hey." I said readjusting my hoodie. I was dressed in dark grey leggings with a horizontal stripped pattern going up the side, matched with a light grey cropped hoodie and white sneakers.
"I'm glad you asked." Danial continued, not letting our little side conversation distract him from his story. "First rule of Miyagi-Do karate." He paused. "Karate is for defense only." He walked to stand in front of the second banner. "Second rule or Miyagi-Do karate. First learn rule number one." He smirked at the two of us. "It's really all about that first rule." I felt a small smile creep onto my lips.
"Guess Mr. Miyagi will make an exception for Cobra Kai?" Robby said, smiling towards Danial. "When my dad learns what were up to, he is not going to know what hit him." Robby chuckled confidently. He walked away, leaving Danial with a concerned look on his face.
