reader insert !↳ DARK depths of the unknown, clawing at the ankles of the innocent and prowling in search of the weak. The ocean was, in your mind, the worst possible place on earth. You absolutely hated that you never knew what was lurking just below you. So, when given the offer of swim lessons from Dream himself, you happily turned it down. You vowed to never touch the murky water or salty seaweed for as long as you lived.
All was good and well with that fact, though sometimes people would forget that you couldn't swim. Especially in the spur of the moment, when things were too hyped up to remember such a trivial fact. No, you weren't mad at Sapnap. The two of you were only playing around the construction sight and Sam was there to stop him from being too rough with you anyway. Accidents were bound to happen, but how bad the accidents were is what really caused issues. It's all fun and games 'til someone gets hurt, right?
"Y/n come back! Kiss me Y/n! Kiss me!" Sapnap yelled, chasing after you with all of his armor off. He was truly trying to jokingly court you, to the point where he had even put his weapons in a chest to prove his worth. Sam stood by, adding clay to the walls of Tommy's soon to be hotel. He stiffened hearing Sapnap ask to kiss his darling. He rolled his eyes and ignored it, knowing his lover wouldn't let it happen.
"Sapnap stop! I swear to god I will kill you!" You snapped back, pulling out the netherite sword Sam had gotten you as a gift a while ago,"Back off!"
"But Y/n," The arsonist whined as he slowed to a stop, slouching just a bit and tilting his head to try and make himself a little cuter,"Kiss me?"
Sam really thought he could control himself. He wasn't that much of an angry person. He put up pretty well with jealousy too, knowing it usually was something stupid in the end. He wasn't sure what made him finally break. Maybe it was the way Sapnap was talking to you or maybe it was the fact that he noticed, out of the corner of his eye, that the ravenette was slowly getting closer. No matter what it was, he spoke up without much thought,"Sapnap, quit it!"
The area around the construction sight was dead silent for a while, all three of you sitting in uncertainty and quite frankly, a bit of fear. Sam was not someone that shouted often, you knew he was being serious with a stern tone like that.
"Sorry dude.." Sapnap grumbled, huffing as he shot his eyes down to the prime path wood. He perked up at his next devious idea,"Y/n..I bet I could still get a hug out of you!"
"Oh god no," You made a run for it, deciding against staying to receive the hug. That was mistake number one, getting Sapnap riled up again. It wasn't long before you both were exhausted and panting. You had managed to run all the way to the end of the L'Manberg crater and back. You laughed as you slowed down a bit, walking backwards. Mistake number two, walking fucking backwards. That was all it took for the worst to happen.
A small, but quite loud gasp left your lips as you slipped off the edge of the prime path, well before either Sam or Sap could grab you. Whatever air was left in you was knocked out of your chest as you hit the water below. It was freezing cold as it was still only morning and on top of that, the fall had made you initially sink low. Managing to struggle to the surface, you let out gasps for air, in the process getting salty water in your mouth which you promptly attempted to spit out.
"Sam!" You gasped from below the construction sight, falling under from mild fatigue. Sapnap watched in horror, already on his way down. He didn't want to directly jump in as it would only cause him to land on top of you and his angle wasn't good for anything else. He took the slighter longer route that cascaded down the nearby terrain, mistake number three.
Water had begun to take over the small amount of air you had left, your vision blurring as you choked on the pain of your lungs compressing to make a little more CO2. You were too out of it to try and fight the deep navy that encapsulated you. You couldn't hear the sudden splash made by a familiar body just next to you. You couldn't feel the arm around your waist that held onto you like you were the only thing that mattered or the tide finally hitting your cheeks. You could barely hear the words a familiar, yet distant voice spoke over the ringing your brain had created.
"Y/n, I need you to hold on to me, can you do that for me?" Sam was managing to keep your head above the water and although the pull was weak, you were able to grip onto his now soaking wet shirt. He pushed the stray strands of hair, that had stuck to your face, away to place a loving kiss to your forehead as he promised in a very reassuring tone you were okay. He kept a firm hold on your waist, using his trident to send you both into the air. He barely managed to throw a shallow puddle of water down for the two of you to land in, but luckily had cushioned you fast enough.
You could tell you were on the newly built floor of the hotel. You couldn't let go of Sam, whether from fear or needing to know you could still feel, you held on tight. Tears had found their way coming down. You coughed hard, the water left in your mouth salty and foul,"S-Sam..."
"Shh, don't strain your voice," He replied quietly as he rubbed his thumb over your wet cheekbone, smoothing out the small, natural wrinkles. The small touch made a sigh leave your lips from the new blossoming warmth it caused. By now he had lifted his mask and brushed it to the side, knowing how much you liked your closest moments together without it. It definitely calmed the situation down.
You listened to his plea for your silence without much hesitation, grabbing him to hold close. Fear took over, you were afraid to lose Sam to the murky depths that never failed to claim you. You couldn't cry very much as exhaustion had already set in. He wrapped his lengthy arms around your form, holding you just as close as you did and as securely as possible. He pressed a small kiss to the top of your head before nuzzling and resting there.
"My adrenaline went up so much when I watched you start to slip off the edge, absolutely horrifying," He commented softly, it wasn't a surprise since you could feel his heart going nuts in his chest and could see his panicked state,"Are you okay? Do you need mouth to mouth? Food? Anything?"
"Sam," You repeated, much stronger than your first attempt. He pulled away from you a bit to see what was wrong, praying you weren't seriously injured. You let out a small laugh, wiping what tears were left over,"Mouth to mouth would be very nice.."
"Mouth to..oh, did I really say that?" Sam let out a laugh at himself, shaking his head before leaning in to press a kiss to your salty and slightly cold lips longingly.
"—Y/n! Y-Y/n, I'm so..so sorry!" Sapnap called out as he curved around the entrance to the hotel,"I didn't think you—"
Sam pulled away from your kiss, a deep frustration and mild irritation already present in his eyes. You bit the inside of your cheek, praying you wouldn't smile too much at what was about to come.
"Sapnap, I'm going to waterboard you if you don't stay the hell away from them," Sam muttered, his glare reaching the pet slayer. Said slayer let out a nervous laugh.
"O–kay! I'll see you later Y/n, sorry again! I'll make it up to you!" Sap didn't hesitate to back away, no one wanted to mess with an angry Sam. He gazed back down at you, his look at the extreme opposite. He looked at you with such patience and care. He ran a hand over your hair and gave you a small, pleased smile as he leaned in once again to peck your lips.
"Let's go get you dried up, then maybe I could take a break and we could go out for a walk," He suggested, despite knowing Sam Nook would get the brute of an earful from Tommy later about how the hotel wasn't even halfway done.
"I like that idea."
