Chapter Seventy-three: "burgers and fries with the guys"

"Noah, Noah, look up here!" Emereigh shouted for me as she stood at the top of the indoor jungle gym.

Because I missed her, I took her to this play center where kids run around like crazy. There's usually birthday parties hosted there and there's also bowling, arcade games, and an area for adults to watch sports. It was like a small Six Flags inside but instead of rollercoasters, it's a million slides, ball pits, and obstacle courses.

I waved from my seat and smiled, removing the toothpick from my mouth.

When she ran off with a friend she made, I returned to checking recent texts from Brooklyn.

I sighed and tilted my hat down.

I wanted to delete the thread or continue leaving her on delivered, but it's been a couple days of this bullshit and I miss how things were.

As I scanned the room for Em, a message illuminated my phone screen. I tore my eyes away for a second to look at the new message that read:

My dad wants to have lunch with you and Rick. I understand if you don't want to go but my mother won't be there.

I wasn't sure how I felt about having a meal with Brooklyn and her father. Michael's cool, but things would be awkward with Brooklyn and I not being on good terms.

Without replying, I locked my phone and put it in my pocket.

Em had stopped yelling for me and I could no longer spot her amongst all the raging kids, or hear her laughs.

I stood and looked over everyone else.

Lastly, I searched, she was by the big slide so I checked there first. No luck.

I started to get worried. There were a million kids and a million places she could be.

As bad as I didn't want to look like the asshole who lost their kid, I had to be.

"Emereigh!" I boomed, doing a 360 spin.

"BOO!" She zipped over my head and giggled as she flipped from the ceiling fixture and landed in the pool of foam squares.

She then ran over to me, bending her knees with excitement.

"What'd ya think?" she asked.

"You almost gave me a heart attack, that's what I think," I breathed, placing her on my shoulders.

"Woah, I'm so tall now," she said. "Go that way!"

I laughed and shook my head but did as told. She gave me directions all the way to the food bar.
