Chapter 10

Maya's POV
I walk into class, still angry about what happened. I sit in the back of the class. Riley walks in. I roll my eyes. She stops.
"Where- where is lucas? He should be here," she says.
I let out a loud sigh.
"Where is he?"
"Yeah, where is he?"
"He is never late!"
Kids were mumbling all these things about lucas' absence.
That made me think: why isn't he in class?
All of a sudden, we heard an ambulance and screaming.
We rushed outside to see what all the commotion was about.
All I saw, frightend me so much, I couldn't move.
Two cars crashed into eachother.
Cop cars.
Ambulances.
Fire trucks.
Fire.
People running and shouting.
And the worse thing, lucas. Lucas lieing on the floor, eyes closed, and cops checking if he is breathing.
Riley runs up to him and starts to cry.
I decide that I should stop being frozen and that I should check if he is OK.
I ran up next to riley.
"Is he breathing?" I ask one of the police officers.
"No, we need to take him to the hospital right away!" He says. He helps put lucas on the gurney and carries him in the abmulence.
"Can I come?" Me and riley say in unison.
"Please?!" Riley says.
"Ugh! Fine!" The police officer says.
Me and riley quickly hop in the ambulance.
It was silent for a really long time.
Finally, riley broke the silence by saying, "We aren't really going to go out."
"What?" I asked, trying my hardest to sound like I didn't know what she was talking about.
"I know that you were in the library this morning and I know that you heard lucas asking me out," she said.
"Yeah, so?" I asked, still a little upset.
"He didn't really ask me out" she said.
"Wha-what?" I asked.
We arrived at the hospital and they told us to get out the ambulance.
"I'll tell you later!" Riley said.
We all rushed in the emergency room, but the doctors wouldn't let me and Riley go with lucas into his room. So me and Riley just sat down.
"Look-" Riley started.
"No! I don't want to talk about it right now!" I interrupted.
It was silent the whole time and we have been waiting for about two hours. Lucas' family came and was waiting with us. Finally, the doctor came in.
"He will survive," he said.
We all sighed of relief.
"But, unfortunately, he lost feelings in his legs, and so he will have to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life."
"What?!?!?" We all said at once.
Lucas came rolling out in a wheelchair.
"Lucas!" Mrs. Frier said as she ran and gave lucas a hug.
Mr. Frier gave lucas a hug, and then riley, then farkle.
'When did farkle get here?' I wondered. Frankly, I had no idea he was here. After everyone gave Lucas a hug, they all stepped away from him, and he was staring at me, and I was staring at him. It was really akward.
"Uh, hey," he said.
I ran up to him and gave him a hug.
But then I remembered that he asked out riley, so I stopped hugging him, and ran away.
'I. Hate. Lucas.' I thought repeatedly.
"Maya! Wait!" Riley shouted, running after me.
"What?!" I asked angrily.
"What was that all about?" She asked.
I got so angry, and I couldn't control it. I gave riley a shove.
"Maya!"
"He hates me!" I blurted out.
"No, no he doesn't!"
"Then why did he ask you out?" I felt a tear drip down my cheek, and I quickly wiped it.
Riley froze.
Riley's POV
"He hates me!" Maya said,
"No, no he doesn't!" I assured her.
"Then why did he ask you out?" A tear slowly dripped down her cheek and she quickly wiped it.
I froze and thought about what lucas told me.

"Riley, can you help me with something?" Lucas asked.
"Sure, what is it?"
"A plan to make Maya jealous."
Lucas explained the whole plan to me.
"So what do YA think?" He asked me when he finished.
"Stupid. Don't make Maya jealous. Just ask her out!" I said.
"No!"
"Fine! Let's do it your way"
"Don't tell Maya!"
~~flashback over~~
"Riley!" Maya said.
"He wanted to make you jealous! He liked you the whole entire time!" I blurted out, covering my mouth when I finished spilling Lucas' secret.
Maya just stood there with her mouth hanging open.
"Maya! Maya!"
Me and Maya turned to see who was calling her name.
Lucas was approaching us in his wheel chair.
"Maya, what's wrong?" He asked once he reached us.
"I-im sorry. I thought you hated me," Maya said.
"Maya, I need to tell you the truth," he started
"I know! Riley said that you wanted to make me jealous and that you love me," she said.
Darn it! I was hoping she wouldn't say that.
"Oh, well, about that... I just want to be friends. If we ever break up, it would really ruin our friendships," he paused, "so, just friends?"
I turned to Maya to see what she would say. She just smiled
"Friends," she reached to lucas and gave him a hug.
